3/7/2003 - Fujitsu Consulting, the global consulting arm of the Fujitsu Group, has been awarded a 10-year contract by Bolton Council to provide the linchpin in the Council's plans for delivering e-Government, as part of the national drive to improve citizen contact.
The project involves a complete renewal of the Council's legacy systems and is designed to support human resource, payroll and purchasing functions, as well as a new CRM (customer relationship management) application. The contract entails implementation and management of the Oracle 11i e-Business suite to deliver an integrated corporate support system.
The solution will underpin frontline information and service delivery points, such as telephone advice points and Internet kiosks, allowing the Council and citizens to communicate more effectively and cost efficiently. Such access points will allow citizens to request services across the whole spectrum of Council activities - from Council Tax benefits to free school meals, for example. The support system will also provide the basis for integrating the Council's services with that of other public sector providers for the Borough, such as the police and the NHS.
Councillor Bob Howarth, Leader of Bolton Council said: "e-Government represents a revolution in how Bolton Council conducts its business and is able to address the modernising agenda set for local authorities by the Government. Some of our corporate systems were already due for renewal. The solution proposed by Fujitsu used this as a springboard to provide an integrated and more citizen-focused system that would meet our needs in these exciting and rapidly changing times."
Commenting on the new contract, Garth Morton, managing consultant within Fujitsu's Oracle practice, concludes: "Building on a successful track record with other councils such as Cambridge, Fujitsu was able to demonstrate its knowledge of local government requirements. We understand that local councils face very specific challenges in updating their systems to meet the needs of the Government, as well as the growing demands from an ever-more discerning and IT-aware public. Our specialist experience in this area puts us in a prime position to deal with these challenges in a comprehensive way."
