National Academy of Engineering Honors Broadcom CTO

3/7/2003 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, announced that the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected Dr. Henry Samueli, Broadcom’s co-founder and Chief Technical Officer, to its roster of new members.

Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made “important contributions to engineering theory and practice, including significant contributions to the literature of engineering theory and practice,” the NAE said. It also honors those who have demonstrated accomplishment in “the pioneering of new fields of engineering, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”

Dr. Samueli’s election was based on his “pioneering contributions to academic research and technology entrepreneurship in the broadband communications system-on-a-chip industry,” according to the NAE citation. Dr. Samueli, who co-founded Broadcom in 1991 and helped drive its growth from a start up enterprise to a company with over $1 billion in annual revenue, was a full-time professor of electrical engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1985 to 1995 before taking a leave of absence to devote his efforts full-time to Broadcom.

“I am truly gratified by this recognition, and honored to be joining the ranks of such an esteemed group of fellow engineers,” said Dr. Samueli. “I congratulate this year’s other elected members, particularly my two colleagues at UCLA, Prof. Tatsuo Itoh and Prof. Eli Yablonovitch.”
