Sun ONE Portal Solutions Improve Performance for Manufacturers

3/5/2003 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. demonstrated the broad support and adoption of the Identity-enabled Sun ONE Portal Server in the manufacturing industry. Leaders such as General Electric Company and Sun Microsystems are leveraging the Sun ONE Portal Server to help streamline their supply chain processes, reduce costs and enhance time to market, while helping enable secure communication with their employees, suppliers and partners.

"Our manufacturing customers are leveraging the Sun ONE platform to accelerate the flow of information through the supply chain by allowing suppliers to collaborate with manufacturers and obtain real-time forecasts and inventory updates" said Steve Pelletier, vice president network identity, communication and portal products, Sun Microsystems.

General Electric (NYSE: GE) has deployed end-to-end technology from Sun to lower operating costs while securely delivering personalized content to more than 250,000 employees, contractors and consultants worldwide. The employee portal helps enable users to customize their portals to deliver the most important and relevant information to them.

"Response from GE employees has been very positive," said Gary Reiner, CIO of General Electric. "They appreciate receiving relevant content through such as communications from senior executives, information specific to one's business unit, and access to various applications. In addition, we've noticed a significant reduction in operating costs, while simultaneously improving communication, collaboration, and resource access among our staff."

Leveraging its own Sun ONE Portal technology, Sun IT deployed the Supplier Portal to increase supply chain efficiencies, tighten relationships with its materials suppliers, and enhance agility in its manufacturing process. Streamlining the information exchange between Sun and its suppliers, Supplier Portal can provide secure access to applications, services and information resources that suppliers require to perform their duties effectively in the extended enterprise.

"The Supplier Portal allows Sun to further leverage a business model that relies on a network of suppliers and external manufacturers," said Bill Vass, vice president of IT, Sun Microsystems. "Sun's world-wide operations are immediately realizing the benefits of deploying the Supplier Portal."

Supplier Portal allows Sun to tailor and control the information that a supplier receives, and to authorize people in specific job functions on the supplier side to only securely access specific and targeted information assets. Sun has virtualized the manufacturing process by outsourcing the production of certain components and products to suppliers that are managed efficiently through the Portal.

Sun's suppliers and partners can remotely access manufacturing and supply chain applications via Sun's patented VPN-on-demand technology from anywhere in the globe - beyond the corporate firewall. The Supplier Portal serves over 270 suppliers/partners with 16 applications representing five business processes: quality, planning, fulfillment, cost management, and customer support. Currently, there are more than 1,900 users of the portal.

The Supplier Portal also maintains forecasts electronically and updates them multiple times daily. A two-way communication channel, the portal automatically alerts suppliers to these updates and to demand for additional items and components.

A demonstration of Sun's Supplier Portal can be seen at booth #800 at the National Manufacturing Week conference.
