Sun, Manugistics Group Partner for Web Collaborative Solution

3/4/2003 - Manugistics Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: MANU) and Sun Microsystems, Inc., announced that the companies are launching a web-based collaborative planning solution deployed on and optimized for Sun hardware. The solution is targeted to discrete manufacturers in the high tech, aerospace & defense, automotive, industrial and medical device industries - organizations that require a flexible IT framework to help enable a collaborative environment among key business partners.

Currently deployed across Sun's supply-planning enterprise, the collaborative planning solution demonstrates the close alignment of Sun and Manugistics with a single purpose to help manufacturers leverage technology to enhance profitability, with faster time to ROI, less complexity and greater flexibility.

"The Manugistics collaborative planning solution deployed on Sun hardware can readily scale across a company's multi-tiered supply chain with powerful flexibility, enabling enterprise users to securely extend the solution to internal and external partners via the Web," said Everett Plante, senior vice president, engineering and technology solutions for Manugistics. "This solution eliminates visibility challenges that often occur across shared business processes within and between enterprises by providing common, shared views of planning data."

With a broad functionality range, including demand planning processes, sales and operations planning processes, and supply planning processes, Manugistics collaborative planning solution on Sun systems can also help customers eliminate process time lags and supply chain distortion, often responsible for creating excesses and supply/demand mismatches.

"We believe there is significant opportunity for companies in discrete manufacturing environments to leverage Net-centric technology and streamline internal and external collaboration with key business partners," stated Bill Gerould, director of manufacturing at Sun Microsystems. "Based on the success of our own real-world implementation, we can help customers minimize the risk associated with first-time deployment and hit the accelerator with respect to productivity and profit."

Gerould added, "What could serve as a stronger testament to the strength of this solution than the benefits we are seeing in our own operations?"

The solution can be sized on Sun systems for small, medium and enterprise-sized deployments, and has been optimized to run on the Solaris Operating Environment. Solaris is a key component of the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE), the open, integratable product portfolio which can enable the development and delivery of Java Web services.

The solution is scheduled to be available for demonstration and proof-of-concept engagements at Sun's iForce Solution Centers located in Menlo Park, California, Paris, France, and Tokyo, Japan. Sun's iForce Solution Centers are designed to help Sun's customers and partners utilize the company's iForce methodology as the basis for building and deploying individualized, best of breed solutions. Solutions available for demonstration at the iForce Solution Centers can be implemented faster and with a reduced total cost of ownership, since Sun and its ISV Partners have documented typical deployments and can offer this information to other interested parties visiting iForce.

Live demonstrations of the Manugistics collaborative planning solution that is deployed at Sun can be seen at the Sun Microsystems partner booth at the National Manufacturing Week in Chicago, in the Enterprise IT Pavilion, from March 3rd to March 5th, 2003.
