Performance Technologies' SEGway Transports NEXTRA to Lower Costs

3/4/2003 - Performance Technologies (Nasdaq NM: PTIX) announced that NEXTRA, a leading European communications service provider, has selected Performance Technologies' SEGwayTM Link Replacement devices for use within its international signaling and data network.

NEXTRA Czech Republic selected Performance Technologies' SEGway devices to reliably transport SS7 messages over managed, shared-use IP networks rather than over dedicated and costly long haul SS7 links. The SEGway devices will reduce NEXTRA's network transportation costs while maintaining the same network reliability and functionality required and expected of today's SS7 networks.

"The SEGway devices are helping us replace costly elements in our network with minimal capital expenditure and are allowing us to reduce operating expenses as we update our network to better service our customers," said Josef Jurašek, development and innovation manager of NEXTRA Czech and Slovak Republic. "We selected Performance Technologies as our network partner because of their impressive history in the development of SS7/IP systems and their in-depth understanding of our needs as a service provider."

Performance Technologies' SEGway Link Replacement devices are small, compact and operationally transparent. Unlike traditional SS7 nodes, SEGway devices do not require scarce network point codes. The devices are deployed in pairs and positioned next to wireless or wireline network entities such as switches (SSP) and Signal Transfer Points (STP). SEGway products utilize the Internet Engineering Task Force's Signaling Transport (IETF SIGTRAN) Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) standard to ensure the same high level of reliability when transporting messages over IP as over traditional SS7 networks.

"The SEGway Link Replacement device is designed to save telecom carriers like NEXTRA Czech Republic the leasing or provisioning costs associated with traditional dedicated long haul SS7 links," said Jason Lawlor, product manager, Performance Technologies. "NEXTRA's selection of this technology is further validation of our strong SS7 over IP product offering. It also demonstrates the need for carriers to reduce operating expenses while leveraging their more cost effective IP bandwidth in the current market environment."
