General Motors Powertrain Standardizes on National Instruments DIAdem

3/4/2003 - National Instruments announced that General Motors Powertrain, a global producer of engines, transmissions, castings and components for GM vehicles, has standardized on a data management system using NI DIAdem software. By providing access to several isolated testing stations with one standard data analysis environment, engineers now can evaluate test data from many of their remote labs worldwide, saving hundreds of engineering hours and cutting costs.

GM Powertrain engineers use the Technical Test Data Environment built by NI Select Integration Partner Quantum Controls to test the functionality of joined engines and transmission systems. This data management system uses DIAdem software to view standard reports and conduct detailed data analysis tasks for the testing of temperatures, pressures, RPMs, fuel efficiency and emissions.

"DIAdem is intuitive and loaded with many versatile features," said Dan McClung, vice president of Quantum Controls. "Using NI software, it is easy to create custom reports, support data mining tasks and automate complex applications, which saves GM engineers several man-hours and dollars per retest."

Previously, GM Powertrain could not benefit from the work produced in multiple laboratories due to incompatible data formats and local storage. Now, GM Powertrain engineers can access and analyze data from any location across the enterprise, using NI DIAdem.

Engineers at GM Powertrain use NI DIAdem to import and export data to and from multiple diverse data structures such as ASAM-ODS, Excel, SQL and binary formats. With DIAdem, GM Powertrain engineers have an intelligent database browser that scans the data directory structure and creates a list of all unprocessed data. DIAdem converts the local and product specific names into universal parameter names and then converts this data into standard international units. Engineers can use this acquired data to generate graphs and create PDF file reports that can be stored on an ftp server for easy access via the Internet.
