Sun Continues to Grow as Unix Server Market Leader

3/3/2003 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced that the company grew its position as the worldwide leader in UNIX® server revenue and unit shipment marketshare for CY2002, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, February 2003. In addition, the company gained UNIX server revenue and unit shipment marketshare for the year and in the fourth quarter.

In the entry level server market (systems under $100K)--which includes servers running all operating systems-Sun grew year-over-year revenue share by over two points, and increased in units shipped. "Open interfaces are a critical aspect of network computing and will continue to shift IT vendor's product mix toward UNIX and Linux," said Shahin Khan, Sun's chief competitive officer. "According to both IDC and Gartner/Dataquest, Sun's leadership in UNIX servers continued in CY2002. At the same time, network computing will fundamentally change how we look at the IT market. Sun's launch of NC03Q1 on Feb. 10 was an important milestone in network computing; Sun is leading the industry toward systems whose building blocks are the computers and storage systems of today."
