Fujitsu Takes Bigger Byte of Enterprise and Mobile Hard Drive Markets

2/26/2003 - Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), one of the world's leading suppliers of hard drives and computer peripherals, announced that it grew its markets share in both the enterprise and mobile hard disk drive markets according to data released by IDC. Fujitsu achieved 23% enterprise market share in the fourth quarter--a 3% increase from the third quarter of 2002 and a 41% increase in terms of units shipped--continuing its presence as the number two enterprise HDD supplier in the world ahead of Maxtor and IBM/Hitachi. Fujitsu also announced sequential mobile hard drive growth for the second straight quarter, ending 2002 with 13% of the market and a 16% increase in the number of units shipped compared to the previous quarter.

"Fujitsu has worked hard to increase its enterprise and mobile hard drive market share despite a lagging economy and competitive pricing within the industry," said David Reinsel, research manager, IDC. "The company is finding ways to capitalize on current growth opportunities within the disk drive industry."

Fujitsu's Innovative Technology Leading the Way
Commitment to the enterprise and mobile hard drive markets has allowed Fujitsu to continue to bring to market industry-leading enterprise hard drives with advanced features such as Fibre Channel and Ultra320 SCSI interfaces and internal data transfer rate increases based on constantly increasing areal density. In addition, Fujitsu continues to focus on smaller form factor disk drives incorporating the next generation Serial ATA interface on its mobile HDDs.

IDC's recent hard disk drive market report highlights Fujitsu's market leadership in the fast-growing enterprise and mobile HDD markets. Fujitsu's aggressive plan to capitalize on the exploding demand for enterprise HDD products and emerging mobile and consumer applications is demonstrated by focused OEM and channel programs and its industry-leading storage technology.

"Fujitsu's focus on mobile and enterprise hard drives has created a product that offers high speed and competitive engineering. For those reasons, Arrow is delighted to offer Fujitsu hard drive storage products to its customers," said Steve Ramsland, vice president, Supplier Services, Arrow Electronics.

Enterprise Hard Drives
Through its commitment to research and development, Fujitsu offers critical insights and expertise on the core components required for next-generation drive technology. Fujitsu enterprise disk drives provide a number of innovative performance features including: Cable Attached Patterned Suspension (CAPS); 32-bit data path; and Synthetic Ferri-Coupled Media. Other new technologies include reduced acoustic levels via the use of Fluid Dynamic Bearings (FDB) and the introduction of "Acceleration Feed Forward," a method of canceling out rotational vibration/shock resulting in improved performance. Fujitsu's enterprise product line includes both 10K and 15K RPM drives with capacities up to 147GB available in U320 or FC-AL2 (10K RPM models).

Mobile Hard Drives
Today's demanding mobile users expect hard disk drives to be compact while offering incredible performance and capacity. Fujitsu's 2.5" MHS Series delivers both without sacrificing efficiency or reliability. High areal densities up to 53.2 Gb/in2, combined with Specular Layer GMR heads, Synthetic Ferri-magnetic Media, and MEEPRML read channel technologies enable these high-capacity drives to deliver outstanding performance. FDB spindle motor technology dramatically improves non-operating shock tolerance and decreases acoustic noise. With capacities of 20GB, 30GB, 40GB and 60GB, a 4,200 RPM rotational speed, and a 2.5" form factor, these drives are big enough to hold large multimedia presentations, fast enough to run them, and small enough to fit in today's compact mobile computers, notebooks and consumer electronic devices.

Fujitsu's Distribution Programs Propel Market Growth
Fujitsu designed its Partner-Force and Firmware & Compatibility Testing (FACT) Lab programs to promote strong relationships with solution providers by offering access to various marketing, technical and sales tools. The FACT Lab performs the important task of interoperability testing to verify compatibility between Fujitsu's hard disk drives, customers' systems and third party products. In addition, the FACT Lab has the expertise to perform in-house joint qualification testing and assist with total solution development for Partner-Force members.
