Agilent Launches RFIC Amplifiers for Communications Applications

2/26/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) announced a new series of low-cost 5-volt silicon RFIC (radio frequency integrated circuit) amplifiers suitable for a wide range of IF and buffer stages in DBS LNBs, cable television distribution and cable modems, GSM/CDMA radio cards, microwave links, fiber optic systems and many other communications applications. With a bandwidth of 0.1 through 3.5 GHz, these RFIC amplifiers in the SOT-363 package offer a combination of noise figure, bandwidth and output power capabilities that has not been available from gain blocks from other manufacturers.

The Agilent ABA-51563, 52563 and 53563 complement Agilent's existing range of RFICs, which include the company's ultra low noise GaAs PHEMT amplifiers and lower-frequency multi-purpose silicon gain blocks. The new RFICs provide a 3 dB bandwidth of 0.1 GHz to 3.5 GHz, and feature unconditional stability combined with input and output VSWRs of less than 2.0, and internal input and output 50 ohm matching, them easy to integrate into a variety of circuit designs.

The demand for higher performance wireless applications at higher frequencies creates a requirement for greater power output capability from amplifier stages -- both for increased linearity and to provide higher drive levels for power amplifiers. The Agilent ABA series amplifiers have been designed with a combination of competitive noise figures with linear output power levels ranging from +1.8 to +12.7 dBm, and third-order output intercept points from +11.4 dBm to +22.9 dBm.

The Agilent ABA-51563 combines 21.5 dB gain with 3.7 dB noise figure and +1.8 dBm linear output power (P1dB), and draws 18 mA at 5 volts. For the ABA-52563, the specifications are 21.5 dB gain, 3.3 dB NF and +9.8 dBm output power, operating at 35 mA. The ABA-53563 combines 21.5 dB gain, 3.5 dB NF and +12.7 dBm output power, operating at 46 mA.

These RFICs are fabricated using Agilent's proven and extremely reliable HP-25 silicon bipolar process with 25 GHz fT and 30 GHz fmax, and are packaged in the ultra-miniature industry standard SOT-363 package.
