2/21/2003 - Sun Microsystems, Inc., and SunGard Availability Services, an operating group of SunGard (NYSE:SDS), announced a joint agreement to market SunGard's industry-leading information availability services, including disaster recovery and high availability services. As part of a strategic alliance, Sun and SunGard will work together to create and sell new business continuity packaging for small, medium, and large customers, as well as high availability packages targeted for large-scale business critical environments.
The first to achieve SunTone[sm] certification for its disaster recovery service offerings, SunGard Availability Services running on Sun[tm] systems offers enhanced capabilities to help reduce exposure to lost information; help reduce overall business risks and help ensure that revenue streams stay intact. Through the combined strengths of the two companies, customers can realize maximum availability of services and minimize interruption to their business-critical information systems.
"This co-selling component of our alliance will benefit our existing customers and future prospects by providing an expanded menu of products and the highest degree of availability and recovery in the industry," stated Pat Doherty, senior vice president of marketing and business development for SunGard Availability Services. "With the recent SunTone certification of our services and our growing strategic alliance with Sun, we're taking the next step forward in fulfilling our vision of providing the industry's most experienced, comprehensive and innovative information availability services offering."
"We are very confident that our selection of SunGard as a partner for business continuance will be pivotal to the continued growth of our business," said Brett Paulson, chief information officer, Chicago Board of Trade Clearing Corporation. "Key to our decision was SunGard's maximum uptime capabilities coupled with their strong collaboration with Sun Microsystems who already provides a powerful infrastructure for our IT needs. We anticipate that the SunGard-Sun combination will help us further enhance the quality of service to our customers, which translates into higher return-on-investment for our business."
"We're very pleased to work with SunGard and believe SunGard Availability Services offers a holistic approach to business continuity by wrapping its arms around the people, networks, data and applications. At the same time, our alliance and joint agreement helps complete the circle of protection and connection," said Stuart Wells, senior vice president, Sun Microsystems Market Development Organization. "From the point of view of the customer, this joint agreement allows our sales organizations to sit down with customers looking to upgrade their business continuity plans and help identify the right balance between hardware improvements and low cost, shared services."
Customers who receive high availability services from SunGard can also utilize Sun StorEdge[tm] Availability Suite Software, or can incorporate the Sun Enterprise Continuity or TruCopy technology for extending clusters and SANs over distances. These high availability packages can utilize the disaster-tolerant capabilities of a SunPLEX system to extend clusters and SANs over long distances, including at local or campus sites, via the Sun Enterprise Continuity Solution. The Sun StorEdge availability software and Truecopy technology also can be incorporated in the high-availability packages.
Demonstrating its continued and growing commitment to deliver the highest level of services to customers, SunGard Availability Services continues to actively participate in the SunTone Architecture Council to extend its efforts for information availability, an aspect of the SunTone specification. SunTone certification provides a quality "seal of approval," confirming that SunGard Availability Services meets stringent scalability, availability, reliability and performance standards necessary for quality deployment and continuous availability of network service delivery.
