2/20/2003 - PA Consulting Group Ltd, Cambridge, UK, have developed the world's first commercially available software baseband solution for 3G W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) basestations. It uses the OSE realtime operating system (RTOS) for telecom infrastructure. With PA’s all-software solution, manufacturers of 3G infrastructure can dramatically reduce their hardware costs for 3G basestations and build more flexible, high performance products. The solution integrates easily with different base station designs, ranging from large macro cell base stations to compact pico cell systems.
PA's advanced solution provides W-CDMA functionality in software, using general-purpose DSP processors in place of specialized electronic hardware. This cuts costs and improves flexibility during development. PA’s software solution also allows network operators to change functionality by downloading new software remotely. Processing can be tuned to suit individual users. The all-software approach takes advantage of dynamic resource allocation or "load balancing" to reduce the processing requirements. It also allows basestation vendors to use patented adaptive demodulation techniques, whereby the basestation can optimise the receiver processing to match the channel conditions of individual users at any time and hence improve sensitivity without the burden of additional hardware.
The software solution uses the OSE RTOS for telecom infrastructure, which especially meets the requirements in communication applications. “The complex processing required by the dynamic scheduling framework of an all-software baseband depends on efficient task scheduling and memory management”, said Tim Lunn, at PA Consulting Group. “We selected the OSE Realtime Operating System because of its powerful features and low MIPS overheads.”

The baseband section is the core part of a 3G base station and is the most numerous and costly part of 3G networks. The performance of a base station also has a critical impact on end-to-end system performance. W-CDMA is a technology for wideband digital radio communications of Internet, multimedia, video and other capacity-demanding applications.
Release 1 of PA Consulting Group’s software solution is available now and will be demonstrated at the 3GSM Conference in Cannes, from Feb 18 to 21; Release 2 will be available worldwide in the near future. It will support uplink data rates from 12.2k to 384k, and will include the signal processing for HS-DPA high-speed packet data service.
