Fujitsu Ramps Up 2.3GB Removable Storage Drive With Hi-Speed USB

2/20/2003 - Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), a leading provider of storage solutions, announced volume availability of its 2.3GB removable storage product, the DynaMO 2300U2, at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Jose. Fujitsu's DynaMO 2300U2, equipped with the Hi-Speed USB interface, is ideal for consumers and professionals that require durable, high-capacity, cost-effective external storage for intensive digital audio and video, data backup, and demanding desktop applications at less than a penny per megabyte. Fujitsu's DynaMO 2300U2 can be seen at IDF, February 18-21, 2003 as part of the USB pavilion in booth number 432.

The reliability, durability and low cost of Fujitsu Magneto-Optical (MO) disk technology combined with the Hi-Speed USB interface offers a significant value proposition to customers. Increased data transfer speeds and plug-and-play simplicity allowed by Hi-Speed USB is well-suited for traditional MO applications including audio and video capture and playback, system backup, archiving, and more.

"We are pleased to announce that end-users in professional markets now have a solution readily available to them for emerging healthcare, legal, federal and financial applications, as well as traditional MO applications including desktop publishing, backup, and archival," said Dan Dalton, director, optical products at Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "For over ten years MO technology has served as a reliable backup and archiving solution. With the availability of the new DynaMO 2300U2 to mainstream consumers, mobile professionals, and those customers within the financial, federal government, and medical industries, Fujitsu brings to market a 2.3GB capacity solution with exceptional performance and rugged durability at a highly competitive price point."

The DynaMO 2300U2 is the external, consumer model of Fujitsu's popular 2.3GB capacity MO internal drive, which is currently used for backup and archiving applications in desktop publishing, medical imaging, telecommunications, and government. The DynaMO 2300U2 offers consumers an alternative to removable magnetic storage solutions such as Iomega® Zip® and Jaz® drives as well as Castlewood Orb® and low end magnetic tape solutions. The DynaMO 2300U2 is priced at $349 (US) and Fujitsu 2.3GB media are priced at $20 (US) per disk, available in 5-packs. Additionally, the drive is fully backward compatible with earlier versions of Fujitsu's 3.5" MO disks (in 128MB, 230MB, 540MB, and 640MB capacities). Also, Fujitsu's DynaMO 2300U2 can be easily used as an original USB device in Mac OS 8.6 and above environments, and on any PC not equipped with Hi-Speed USB.

"Products equipped with the Hi-Speed USB interface can offer substantially increased performance for end users compared to original USB," said Jason Ziller, USB-IF chairman and Intel technology initiatives manager. "Fujitsu's accomplishment of bringing this Hi-Speed USB compliant product to market is another example of the broad deployment of the technology."

Protecting Investments in Data
Magneto-optical storage backs up and archives data produced in office, home, or industrial applications that require high capacity, reliable, removable storage. Magneto-optical technology is resistant to data loss as a result of shock, vibration, moisture, dust and magnetic fields.
