IONA, Jasna to Build Law Enforcement Wireless Communications Solution

2/20/2003 - IONA®, the leading provider of Rapid Integration software (NASDAQ: IONA), and JASNA SA, the leading systems integrator for wireless data and voice services in Mexico and South America, announced their partnership in the design and implementation of a next-generation Mobile Data Infrastructure system for the State Police and District Attorney departments of Nuevo Leon, Mexico (Consejo De Seguridad, Estado de Nuevo Leon).

JASNA SA was contracted by the Mexican National Security Council (Consejo Nacional de Seguridad) to build a law enforcement wireless communications solution that would improve emergency unit response time, vehicle location services, and dispatching facilities. JASNA SA chose IONA's Orbix® Application Server PlatformTM to serve as the backbone of this network based on its industry-leading implementation of the CORBA® standard, and the associated performance, reliability, security, and scalability benefits.

"It was agreed upon prior to the project that CORBA technology be a required component of this solution because of its unmatched ability to provide the 24x7 reliability and cross-platform compatibility equal to the challenge of protecting the citizens of Nuevo Leon," said Juan Lozano, president of JASNA SA. "IONA is the world's leader in CORBA solutions for mission-critical integration projects and was our clear partner choice to provide the backbone for the mobile data infrastructure built for Nuevo Leon."

The State of Nuevo Leon is located in the Northeast of Mexico and borders the US state of Texas to the North. Nuevo Leon is divided into 51 municipalities and 74% (or approximately 4 million citizens) of the states population lives in the metro area of the capital city of Monterrey. The new law enforcement wireless communications system built by JASNA SA, IONA, and other partners including Dataradio Inc. of Montreal, Canada, will be delivered within the next 30 days and installed over the next six months beginning in the Greater Monterrey region and the neighboring communities. It will grow to support in excess of 30 base stations and more than 2,500 vehicles across an area spanning more than 24,000 square miles.

"We are extremely proud to have been chosen by Consejo De Seguridad, Estado de Nuevo Leon and JASNA SA to support this important project," said Barry Morris, CEO at IONA. "Their requirement that CORBA technology be core to this project is evidence of the technologies' maturity and valuable applications. Like Consejo De Seguridad, Estado de Nuevo Leon and JASNA SA, any organization or project whose priorities include interoperability, scalability, and performance continue to make CORBA and IONA their one and only choice."
