Ten Million FBAR Duplexers and Counting for Agilent Technologies

2/20/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) has shipped its 10 millionth film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) duplexer since release of the product in the winter of 2001, having shipped more than 1 million duplexers per month since July. The latest version of the breakthrough communications component, the next-generation, 66 percent smaller (5 x 5 x 1.4 mm) FBAR duplexer, is now sampling to select manufacturers.

Duplexers play a critical role in code division multiple access (CDMA) handsets and data cards by separating incoming communications from outgoing communications to allow for simultaneous two-way voice or data transmission. Traditionally, duplexers have been the second largest component in a wireless phone, after the battery.

"Our FBAR duplexer component is showing up in several of today's feature-rich, ultra-compact CDMA handsets," said Bryan Ingram, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Wireless Semiconductor Division. "Customer interest has been tremendous, and we're already beginning to ship initial engineering samples of our next-generation smaller FBAR duplexer to select manufacturers."

Agilent FBAR duplexers have been designed into more than 40 mobile terminal platforms, including next-generation PCS (personal communications service) band phones from six top CDMA (code division multiple access) handset manufacturers. At a height of 2 mm and 1.4 mm, Agilent's first- and second-generation FBAR duplexers are the only duplexers that meet the maximum height limit for CDMA data cards. In terms of performance, FBAR duplexers provide better power handling, insertion loss, and selectivity characteristics than surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices.
