2/19/2003 - RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, announced its POLARIS(TM) TOTAL RADIO(TM) solution has been selected by National Semiconductor as a key part of National's GSM/GPRS system solution, announced separately yesterday.
RF Micro Devices and National Semiconductor collaborated on the specification and implementation of a digital interface between the radio and baseband. By achieving compatibility between the POLARIS chipset and National Semiconductor's GSM/GPRS baseband processor through this innovative digital interface, RFMD and National Semiconductor enable handset developers with a complete, highly integrated GSM/GPRS Class 12 solution that minimizes external components and power consumption while maximizing performance.
Jean-Louis Bories, executive vice president of National's Wireless and IA Group, said, "National selected the POLARIS TOTAL RADIO solution for use in our GSM/GPRS chipset reference design and module products based on its superior level of integration and advanced product attributes, specifically its digital interface to our LMX3415 baseband. National Semiconductor's GSM/GPRS solutions enable a superior offering with reduced component count, greater ease of implementation and one of the highest levels of analog integration in the industry."
Eric Creviston, corporate vice president of wireless products of RF Micro Devices, said, "We are very pleased that National Semiconductor is combining RFMD's POLARIS TOTAL RADIO solution with their GSM/GPRS system solutions. National Semiconductor's decision to use our POLARIS solution exemplifies the success of RFMD's strategy to develop compatible, highly integrated radio chipsets with analog and digital interfaces to leading next-generation baseband solutions. The collaboration between both companies to develop complete solutions for the GSM/GPRS market capitalizes on National Semiconductor's baseband experience and architecture and RFMD's expertise in RF circuits."
The RF Micro Devices POLARIS TOTAL RADIO solution is a highly integrated quad-band transceiver with power amplifier module for GSM, GPRS and E-GPRS applications. The POLARIS solution performs all major functions of the RF section, including both transmit and receive, and provides handset manufacturers the benefits of reduced component count, flexible baseband interfaces and lower cost of implementation. Driven by high levels of integration in both the transmit and receive functions, the POLARIS solution significantly reduces the number of components required to implement a complete GSM/GPRS radio.
National Semiconductor's GSM/GPRS product offerings are among the most highly integrated system solutions available for GSM/GPRS handsets. National integrates critical analog and wireless capabilities - such as audio, power management, Bluetooth(TM) connectivity, imaging interface, baseband and RF - into module and chipset platforms for mobile phone manufacturers. Leveraging National's expertise in the design, packaging and manufacture of analog products, the integrated module and chipset provide high quality sound, longer battery life and imaging functionality for the complete spectrum of GSM/GPRS phones. The integrated chipset offers customers the ability to fully customize their solutions; the module is designed for ODMs/OEMs who need a complete GSM/GPRS engine for fast time-to-market. Both the chipset and module come with full development kits.
RF Micro Devices, Inc., an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer, designs, develops, manufactures and markets proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) primarily for wireless communications products and applications such as cellular and PCS phones, base stations, wireless LANs, and cable television modems. The Company offers a broad array of products - including amplifiers, mixers, modulators/demodulators, and single-chip receivers, transmitters and transceivers - representing a substantial majority of the RFICs required in wireless subscriber equipment. The Company's strategy is to focus on wireless markets by offering a broad range of standard and custom-designed RFICs in order to position itself as a "one-stop" solution for its customers' RFIC needs.
