NMS, Sonorys, and Swapcom Join Forces for Short Message Service Platform

2/19/2003 - NMS Communications, trusted supplier of communications products and services, SONORYS Technology GmbH, an Austrian company providing professional services for speech enabled applications, and SWAPCOM, the European leader in mobile messaging software have joined forces to create an enhanced service platform that allows Short Message Service (SMS) text messages to be sent between fixed line phones and other fixed line phones or wireless devices. Using the Wireline SMS Platform, operators and communication equipment providers can now tap the 1 billion worldwide wireline customer installed base with this valuable service extension. The Wireline SMS Platform is available now.

Compatible fixed-line phones will receive SMS text, whereas legacy phones will receive the message automatically converted to voice via text-to-speech technology. To send a text message using a fixed line phone, users simply type their message on their fixed touchtone phone as they would on their mobile phone and enter the fixed or mobile phone number to which they wish to send a message. Messages pass through the network via an intelligent fixed line SMS gateway. NMS and Swapcom have incorporated all of the standards and technology required for carrier grade deployment and interoperability between wireless and wireline networks into the Wireline SMS Platform.

"This opens the door for significant added revenue opportunities for operators," said Gerrold Walker, vice president and general manager of NMS' Platform Solutions business. "Wireless SMS is a staple of communications in Europe and beyond, and now, as a result of Swapcom's Wireline SMS Platform, operators can extend that lucrative subscriber base to include wireline customers. We're thrilled that Swapcom took advantage of our experience in helping operators and communication equipment providers deliver enhanced voice and data services over wireline and wireless networks."

"Swapcom has joined its cutting-edge wireless technology with NMS' experience in telecom hardware and software, and to Sonorys for text-to-speech savoir-faire. By selecting this combined solution, telecom operators and ISPs have new opportunities to increase ARPU. Therefore, the Wireline SMS platform will enable them to capture new revenues from SMS traffic, fixed customers and extend SMS coverage with additional addressable phones," said Olivier GraŽff, Swapcom CEO.
