2/19/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) introduced the Agilent OSS Global Roaming Test Service, the industry's most extensive service of its kind. The new service enables wireless communication providers to maintain the high level of GPRS service quality that lucrative international roaming customers expect. Agilent offers the innovative, cost-effective solution in cooperation with SIGOS Systemintegration GmbH, a German telecommunications test company, to allow proactive and preventative testing of roaming service availability and performance.
For most service providers, testing for roaming voice calls is a manual process. Since a single service provider can have more than 200 roaming partners, this process has been unmanageable, costly and time consuming. As service providers introduce GPRS-enabled data services, the automation of roaming testing becomes fundamental to ensuring high-quality services.
The automated Global Roaming Test Service uses subscriber identity module (SIM) cards to perform active test calls on an extensive range of GPRS roaming services, such as voice, SMS, e-mail, Web, corporate VPN access, and MMS. Scheduled, repeatable tests identify potential problems, such as slow Web download speeds in a particular country or delayed MMS messages; and critical problems, such as dropped calls while roaming.
Global Roaming Test Service helps wireless service providers ensure smooth operation of new service offerings both before commercial launch and during operation. Because this is a service offering, there are no support or maintenance costs and no capital expenditures. The service will initially monitor roaming in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, with plans to expand throughout Europe and other parts of the world.
If a problem occurs while roaming, subscribers hold their own service provider responsible -- even if the problem is caused by a roaming partner's error. To keep roaming subscribers satisfied, service providers must ensure that their roaming partners uphold their service level agreements (SLAs). The Agilent service enables communication providers to examine quality of service (QoS) on their roaming partner's networks as well as their own, which enables them to monitor SLA compliance, proactively rectify problems on multiple networks and maximize network revenues.
"Our new Global Roaming Test Service monitors roaming service quality for both a service provider's own subscribers that are abroad and for visitors that have roamed onto their network," said Marshall Calman, vice president and general manager, Agilent OSS Services. "This keeps roaming operations under a service provider's control so they can both protect and increase high-value roaming business."
