Tektronix Video Monitoring Technology Sails into China Award

2/14/2003 - Tektronix Inc. (NYSE:TEK), the industry leader in video test, measurement, and monitoring, announced that its proprietary gamut technology has been selected as the technique used to evaluate the technical quality of television programs contending for China's "Golden Sail Award."

For the first time in determining the award winner, Chinese judges will evaluate a video program's technical quality based on objective measurements, rather than on subjective tests. Tektronix waveform monitors will be used to determine the gamut compliance of the video signals being evaluated. Gamut is the range of colors allowed for a video signal.

"Digital broadcasting requires new monitoring techniques to ensure the quality of a broadcast. Tektronix' gamut monitoring technologies enable the video professional to easily verify validity of their signal, thus ensuring program quality," said Ms. Bian Meijin, Chairperson, SARFT Golden Sail Award.

"Monitoring digital video quality presents new challenges to broadcasters everywhere. By providing innovative and specialized displays, Tektronix waveform monitors simplify the task of assessing video signal colorimetry and verifying content quality," said Todd Biddle, General Manager, Video Product Line, Tektronix. "We are proud our products are being used in a prestigious award show, such as the Golden Sail Awards."

Tektronix Proprietary Displays Used to Ensure Gamut Compliance
Tektronix's proprietary Diamond, Split Diamond and Arrowhead displays help prevent the undesired impact of color gamut violations and simplify assessment of proper gamut compliance. These displays are built into Tektronix waveform monitors. The Diamond and Split Diamond displays are component displays that offer reliable indication of gamut violations within the RGB domain. The Arrowhead display is used with component signals to confirm they will remain within gamut when converted to a composite PAL or NTSC signal, without the need to process the signal through a composite encoder.

About the Award-winning WFM700 Waveform Monitor
The multi-format, multi-standard Tektronix WFM700 Series Waveform Monitor supports both digital standard definition and high definition video. Thanks to a newly released audio module and recent software enhancements, it also supports AES/EBU (including embedded) audio monitoring, remote access and control, detailed video and audio session screens, and multi-mode display capabilities. In multi-mode, the WFM700 lets users flexibly combine two displays, including Tektronix-patented displays, into a single split view to save time and increase efficiency.

With fully digital processing, the WFM700 series offers exceptional measurement accuracy, repeatability, and stability. By eliminating the need for periodic recalibration and adjustment, fully digital processing also lowers cost of ownership.
