2/14/2003 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, announced that Pantech & Curitel Inc. (formerly Hyundai) of Korea has launched two new GSM handsets using Broadcom's cellular phone platform technology and has selected Broadcom's GPRS technology for a series of new handsets that it plans to introduce this year. These new phones include a variety of features, from low cost entry-level GSM handsets to high-end flip-style phones that offer higher functionality and utilize the GPRS standard, as well as GSM.
The first Pantech & Curitel phones, which have already moved into volume production, are the dual band GX100TM and GX108TM clamshell GSM handsets. These handsets are based on the Broadcom® BCM2011 Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) baseband processor and use a complete reference design and system software developed by Broadcom. The forthcoming Pantech & Curitel GX200/210/230TM models will incorporate the BCM2021 single-chip GSM/GPRS baseband processor solution, which integrates both mixed signal and digital elements to provide a very small, low cost solution.
"Broadcom delivered a production-ready GSM handset design, along with silicon and software, in only eight months, helping us satisfy our customers' desire for leading edge handset technology," said Dr. Moon Song, CEO and President of Pantech & Curitel's Handset Division. "We are very pleased to have a partner that shares our commitment to applying new technology to mobile communications."
"In the highly competitive GSM market, a low bill-of-materials (BOM) and the ability to deliver a complete solution are very important for reducing time to market," said Tung Chang, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Mobile Communications Business Unit. "Pantech & Curitel has brought to market quality, low cost GSM and GPRS handset products with sleek designs."
The GX100 and GX108 GSM handsets offer a full range of popular features, including a backlit seven-color display, polyphonic ringer, a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) for mobile Internet applications, and Chinese character sets. Pantech & Curitel has already commenced volume production of the GX100 and GX108 models, and the handsets are currently available through various service providers in China, including CECT and Capital.
In addition to the GSM handsets, Broadcom is also providing the technology for a number of new Pantech & Curitel handsets, including General Packet Radio System (GPRS) versions with high resolution color displays, Enhanced Messaging Services (EMS) and models designed for the United States with the Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) codec.
Broadcom recently announced that its GSM/GPRS technology has passed the latest release of the GSM Certification Forum (GCF3.7.1) and PTCRB certification protocols for North America, clearing phones based on Broadcom technology for use in all the largest GSM/GPRS markets in the world.
