2/10/2003 - Virtio Corporation, the creator of virtual platforms for embedded software development, announced that it has signed a technology license and distribution agreement with Japan-based Toyo Corporation. Under the terms of the agreement, Toyo, with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, will supply VirtioSM Virtual Platform environments and develop new platforms for the Japanese market using Virtio's technology.
Shay Ben-Chorin, Virtio president and CEO stated, “We are very excited to have Toyo serve as the exclusive distributor and developer of Virtio platforms for the Japanese market. Japan is an important part of the embedded systems market as a whole and particularly for Virtio. The emphasis on communication devices, especially hand-held wireless devices that incorporate high functionality embedded platforms, makes Japan a perfect market segment for Virtio. The more complex the functionality of these platforms, the more important it is for developers to have early access to the complete platform including their chosen RTOS and software development environment prior to having the requisite hardware.”
Koichiro Fukumoto, president for Toyo Corporation noted, “The completeness of Virtio's tool environment with interfaces, peripherals and real world connection models enables us to fully service the needs of Japanese customers from platform/device development through to platform/device distribution. Being able to deliver a robust development environment that enables embedded system developers to innovate software on software is a significant advantage to our customer base that has to continually incorporate new functionality into their end products and deliver complete new product generations within a 12 month or less timeframe.”
Virtio Virtual Platforms are complete models of embedded systems including processors, peripherals and user interfaces as well as connections to real world-like serial ports and network connections. Virtio's models are binary compatible with hardware and are integrated with leading software development environments including Metrowerks CodeWarriorTM, Microsoft® Platform Builder and eMbedded Visual Tools, ARM RealViewTM development solution, Mentor Graphics XRAY® Debugger, Wind River Tornado® II and Green Hills MULTI®. Virtual platforms offer software teams improved productivity by enabling early software development and integration through focusing on the top three issues in embedded software development—early access to hardware, complete visibility into the hardware for integrating software and the ability to control the hardware during software integration.
As the exclusive distributor of Virtio Virtual Platforms in Japan, Toyo Corporation will develop and service the Japanese market. The technology license includes the tool environment used to create models of user interfaces, the peripherals and real-world connections as well as access to Virtio's growing library that contains these interfaces, peripherals and connections. Processor platforms available for distribution by Toyo include the ARM7TM and ARM9TM, Intel® XScaleTM microarchitecture (PXA250 applications processor) and MIPS32TM and MIPS64TM architectures, as well as additional new architectures that will be released by Virtio in Q1 2003.
