2/10/2003 - QNX Software Systems, the industry leader in realtime, microkernel RTOS technology, and Hughes Software Systems (HSS), the world leader in software components for convergent networks, announced an alliance to offer integrated solutions to the telecom space.
This partnership brings together QNX's microkernel realtime operating system technology with HSS' protocol stacks for convergent networks, together offering integrated solutions to the telecom OEM marketplace. This alliance is in line with the telecom market's trend towards open architectures, for which equipment manufacturers choose best-in-class components while also demanding that pre-integrated and customizable solutions be available.
HSS has validated the following protocol stacks on the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system, version 6.2.1: SCCP (Wireline), ALCAP, MTP3-B & SAAL-NNI (Wireless and Broadband), SCTP and M3UA (Voice over Packet). HSS protocol stacks communicate with the underlying operating system via a common abstraction library; the validation of this library ensures that effectively all HSS protocol stacks can be delivered on QNX Neutrino.
By collaborating with HSS, QNX Software Systems will be able to provide its existing and future customers with best-in-class protocol products and specialized outsourcing services on QNX platforms. By collaborating with QNX, HSS will be able to offer an enhanced choice of operating systems that its customers can use to meet their system needs.
"HSS's comprehensive suite of protocol stacks on the QNX Neutrino realtime operating system offers network equipment providers a powerful way to develop new high-performance products across diverse platforms for a wide range of telecom markets," said Anita Gupta, assistant vice president of business development, Mobile Networks Group, Hughes Software Systems. "The availability of HSS protocol stacks on QNX Neutrino will significantly reduce development cost and time-to-market for these OEMs."
"HSS saves OEM development time by providing the software building blocks required across multiple IP, optical, and wireless segments of the network," said Linda Campbell, director of strategic alliances, QNX Software Systems. "And QNX complements this by offering the QNX Neutrino RTOS, an operating system with a 20-year history of reliability and scalability that permits uninterrupted operation over the long life-cycles required by carrier-grade networking equipment."
About the QNX Neutrino RTOS
Based on a scalable microkernel architecture, the QNX Neutrino RTOS offers symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), built-in distributed processing, fault-tolerant networking, and full memory protection for all drivers, protocol stacks, and applications. QNX Neutrino also provides support for high-availability applications, including automatic recovery from software failure and in-service upgrades.
About HSS' Protocol Stacks
HSS' widely deployed and platform-independent protocol stacks - available as both source code and binary - reduce the time-to-market, cost, and program risk for telecom equipment manufacturers worldwide. HSS' standards-compliant product lines and specialized customization/outsourcing services have helped almost 200 telecom equipment manufacturers to develop systems for their end customers. HSS offers the widest available range of data plane, control plane, and application plane protocol stacks required for building systems in the Voice over Packet, Wireless (2.5G and 3G), Wireline (SS7) and Broadband (B-SS7 and ATM) domains.
By acting as a global hub for protocol stack development and as a guarantor for multi-vendor interops, HSS avoids the duplication of investments across multiple firms and hence improves the efficiency of the telecom industry as a whole.
