2/5/2003 - Red Hat, Inc. (Nasdaq:RHAT), the world's premier open source and Linux provider announced Red Hat Academy, a complete educational package enabling schools and colleges to teach an academic version of Red Hat's Red Hat Certified Engineer® (RHCE®) training and certification program. Red Hat Academy brings the highly regarded curriculum to high schools and colleges worldwide. Available initially in English, the program will deliver quality, up-to-date IT curricula based on Red Hat 's operating system and open technologies, and allows schools to administer the Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) exam. Institutions will now be equipped to confront the worldwide shortage of skilled IT workers who can support private and public organizations as they integrate operating systems, networking, applications, databases, webservers, and the Internet.
"We are delighted to be the first school to sign up for Red Hat Academy, said Sylvia Anderson, Director of Career and Technical Education and College Tech Prep for Guilford County Schools, one of the model workforce development programs in the US. "We believe this program offers our students the best chance to learn solid computer systems engineering skills that will serve them in almost any future career, whether entering the workforce directly or going to university."
The business community has been eager to implement Red Hat Linux Training in the the Guilford County Schools. Dr. Sue Polinsky, Chair of the Guilford County Schools' College Tech Prep IT Committee and Representative to NC Career-Technical Education Business Partnership, has shown great support for the Red Hat Academy. "The county's business community has been clamoring for, and is now supporting, Red Hat Linux certification training for our students," said Dr. Polinksy. "This training means more employable young people right out of high school or college-bound students who have an edge. That translates to bridging the gap between the schools and the Triad's economic development efforts."
Red Hat Academy arrives at a time when schools and colleges, states and countries are facing budget shortfalls, while under pressure to raise the bar, bridge the digital divide, compete globally, and justify educational initiatives. "The costs and legal burden of proprietary software for education are becoming unsupportable, with direct effect on opportunity and futures for young adults and the workforce as a whole," said Matthew Szulik, Chairman and CEO of Red Hat. "The call has gone out for a better way to educate computing skills, for access and choice of reliable software technology in schools and colleges worldwide."
"Linux is uniquely positioned to transform technology in education, and now there is a world-class Red Hat curriculum geared for schools and colleges, based on their RHCE curriculum." said Tom Miller, Vice Provost for NCSU's DELTA, one of several Red Hat Academy Partners. "It is fortunate for the education community that Red Hat is providing this powerful and enabling educational offering, coming at this critical time for schools, colleges and universities."
Red Hat's training program and RHCT certification provide a leveraged foundation for almost any IT-related career option, including system administration, network engineering, C or C++ programming, databases, web development, PC repair, forensic computing, and also provides excellent preparation for university level computing. "The Red Hat Academy curriculum is ideally suited to learning how computers and networks really operate," said Peter Childers, VP of Global Learning Services at Red Hat. "Red Hat Academy enables workforce educators to supercharge the way computing skills are instructed, learned, and mastered at their institution."
Red Hat Academy is available with no software license costs and with an institution-wide curriculum license. Red Hat will be formally unveiling the program at its booth at the 2003 Florida Educational Technology Conference in Orlando, Feb 4-6, For more information, visit http://www.redhat.com/training/academy or call 866-2-REDHAT.
