PointBase Releases Version 4.5 to Address Production-Level Java Embedded Databases

Recognizing that PointBase products are increasingly used in production-level environments, version 4.5 features provide additional stability and scalability benefits for Java application developers.

The PointBase 4.5 release lengthens PointBase’s already considerable technology lead in the embedded database market that according to a Gartner Group study, will grow to over $600 million in 2005. A recent study by IDC confirms the anticipated strong growth, which the analysts conclude will be partly driven by technologies like that of PointBase, particularly in vertical markets implementing enterprise data mobility solutions such as healthcare, government and manufacturing.

The PointBase product family includes:

  • PointBase Embedded 4.5 -- A powerful, small-footprint, Java Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) ideal for embedding in Java applications that need a multi-threaded architecture permitting multiple connections within the same JVM (Java Virtual Machine). Noted for its transparency to end users, PointBase Embedded 4.5 offers true portability across all platforms, streamlined application deployment and integration, and automatic administration. Version 4.5 sports industrial-strength improvements in performance and stability, including new debugging features, connection pooling, B-tree optimization, and identity columns for clustered tables, as well as added support for AES encryption. In addition, PointBase 4.5 Embedded includes a Server Option to support distributed applications utilizing remote JDBC connections.
  • PointBase Micro 4.5 -- A high-performance Java RDBMS that boasts an ultra-small footprint of 46K, perfect for advanced Java-based mobile devices. Specifically designed for the J2SETM and J2METM platforms, PointBase Micro 4.5 supports a broad subset of the JDBC API. With its all-Java implementation, PointBase Micro 4.5 opens the door for a wide variety of enterprise applications to run smoothly on today’s growing number of small mobile devices, eliminating the need for a constant wireless connection to enterprise database servers. With version 4.5, PointBase Micro supports multiple connections with table-level locking between transactions for strong concurrency. It also adds more complete support for basic SQL features, including the IN and NOT IN operators and the UPPER() and LOWER() functions.
  • PointBase UniSync 4.5 – This database synchronization product easily synchronizes and maintains subset copies of master databases, utilizing newly supported JOIN filters which allow applications to synchronize sets of tables without denormalization. Although it is tightly integrated with PointBase Embedded and PointBase Micro, PointBase UniSync 4.5 provides bi-directional data synchronization between PointBase database products and also enterprise databases, such as Oracle® and Microsoft® SQL ServerTM. Enterprises can now extend the reach of their critical data through the PointBase solution, which includes such comprehensive synchronization features for distributed applications as filtering and conflict resolution.
