2/3/2003 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) introduced a new tricolor ChipLED surface-mount LED (light-emitting diode) that permits next-generation handset and PDA designers to mix separate red, green and blue light sources in any combination. This makes it easy for a manufacturer to select a backlighting color to differentiate its products, allowing colors to change based on a particular application.
The Agilent HSMF-C118 ChipLED is intended primarily for backlighting and status indicators in handheld devices such as mobile phones and PDAs. In handsets, for example, separate colors can indicate incoming SMS (short messaging system) messages, e-mail, stock news, and even identify different callers. In addition to handhelds, the availability of an unlimited range of illumination colors provides a new degree of design flexibility in many other applications such as backlighting and status indication in office and industrial equipment and home appliances.
Agilent's tricolor ChipLED surface-mount LED features three die in a triangular matrix at the center of the package combined with diffused optics to provide a smooth, consistent spatial radiation pattern and effective color mixing. It features high-efficiency LED chips--AlInGaP (aluminum indium gallium phosphide) for red, and InGaN (indium gallium nitride) for blue and green -- to provide the highest brightness at lowest power consumption for handheld products.
The tricolor LED features a 4-terminal common anode and is housed in Agilent's miniature 3.2 mm (L) x 2.7 mm (W) x 1.1 mm (H) ChipLED package. Precision manufacturing techniques ensure perfect pick-up by automated manufacturing equipment.
