12/22/2003 - Adhering to its five year minimum product lifespan policy, VersaLogic Corp. has announced a revision of its popular VSBC-8 EBX single board computer. The upgrade is designed to ensure the product’s availability through at least 2008.
Although obsolescence issues related to the C&T 69030 video chip resulted in a number of discontinued products from other embedded computer manufacturers, VersaLogic opted to redesign several of their impacted products. They citied customer support as the basis for their decision. “It’s not as glamorous as designing new products, but VersaLogic customers choose us because they need a long-term solution,” remarked Tom Barnum, VersaLogic’s VP of Sales and Marketing. He adds, “We’ve made a commitment to support products for a targeted life-span greater than 5 years. This revision fulfills our promise while offering increased functionality to our end-users.”
VersaLogic’s search for a long-life replacement component came with an added bonus. The ATi Rage Mobility M chip provides additional video performance and functionality.
“For many customers, the revised VSBC-8 product will be a drop-in replacement,” indicates VersaLogic’s VP of Engineering, Gary Harris. “However, any kind of transition can take some time for an OEM”. VersaLogic is offering a last-time-buy option that will allow existing customer up to 12 months to make the transition to the new version of the board.
