IDT Targets Emerging Digital Home Network with New Interprise Processor

12/18/2003 - IDTTM (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; Nasdaq: IDTI), a leading communications IC company, introduced its new IDT RC32434 InterpriseTM integrated communications processor targeting the emerging digital home network, which includes multimedia applications such as media servers, media adapters and IP-based network appliances. Delivering frequencies up to 400 MHz, the IDT RC32434 processor is ideally suited to meet the system performance needs of these applications, while providing additional CPU overhead to enable system differentiation and ease system upgrades as new digital media standards emerge. Additionally, the new processor provides system designers the flexibility to architect a wide range of solutions by integrating the standard peripheral component interconnect (PCI) interface that offers connectivity to off-the-shelf peripherals such as 802.11a/b/g and serial ATA. Furthermore, the IDT RC32434 processor integrates a 16-bit wide DDR memory controller that delivers performance usually achieved with a larger memory subsystem footprint. An integrated non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM) and an authentication unit (AU) for security functionality allow designers to differentiate their designs by developing solutions that enable digital content protection applications and unique identification storage.

“Following the widespread deployment of broadband access and the commoditization of customer premises equipment, the introduction of multimedia network appliances is the next evolutionary phase of the digital home network,” said Matt Jones, marketing manager for the IDT Internetworking Products Division. “IDT prides itself in recognizing emerging market opportunities and developing solutions that contain the right mix of performance and peripherals to address them. The IDT RC32434 InterpriseTM processor provides designers of multimedia appliances the ideal combination of performance, flexibility and security functionality to architect innovative solutions for next-generation digital home network applications.”

“There’s no question that home audio/video and home networks are both growing rapidly, and these boxes need fast, flexible, but inexpensive processors,” said Jim Turley, industry analyst and editor of Silicon-Insider. “The IDT InterpriseTM RC32434 device certainly fits the bill. It’s fast, it’s cheap, and it’s well supported as part of a family of compatible chips. These mighty processors are driving today’s hottest products.”

About the RC32434 InterpriseTM Processor
The RC32434 InterpriseTM integrated communications processor incorporates the industry’s highest-performance 32-bit MIPS® 4Kc CPU core operating at up to 400 MHz, with a double data rate (DDR) memory controller supporting a 16-bit wide memory, a 32-bit version 2.2 PCI controller and a dedicated local memory I/O controller. The new processor also includes a single Ethernet channel that enables speeds of up to 100 Mbps with options for either a standard media independent interface (MII) or reduced MII (RMII), which provides connectivity to a wide range of networking devices and equipment. The RC32434 processor integrates 64 bytes of NVRAM that allows OEMs the option to enable differentiated features, such as access control, anti-hacking and anti-cloning. In addition, the NVRAM adds value to general-purpose applications, removing the need for certain external peripherals that store system configuration data and device identification such as IP addresses.

As part of its commitment to provide comprehensive hardware and software tools that reduce design cycles and improve time to market, IDT offers an internally developed, royalty-free IDT Linux®-based software package that includes extensive peripheral driver support, as well as comprehensive libraries for many protocols and applications. Linux and VxWorks® board support packages (BSPs) for the RC32434 processor are also available from IDT. The RC32434 processor is software compatible with the other members of the IDT InterpriseTM family, allowing customers to choose from a large suite of proven third-party MIPS software development tools, such as Green Hills® and Wind RiverTM, and a variety of off-the-shelf applications.
