12/17/2003 - Mindready Solutions, the leader in industrial-grade IEEE-1394 hardware, software and engineering services, announced its new glass optical fiber 1394b interfaces.
Development was based on a Mindready's SedNetTM PC104+ OHCI board, using a customized version of Agilent Technologies' HFBR-59L1 small form factor (SFF) 850nm fiber optic transceiver with extended temperature range (-40ºc, +85ºc) and Texas Instruments' TSB41BA3 1394b PHY (Physical Layer Controller). In laboratory tests, the board supported communication at distances of up to 500 meters node-to-node on multimode glass optical fiber at speeds of 400Mbps for both asynchronous and isochronous communications. Fully compliant with the IEEE-1394b glass optical interface specification (850nm SFF transceiver using LC type connectors), communications are immune to ambient electromagnetic noise and produce zero cable emissions.
Pushing research further, Mindready used a standard version of Agilent's HFCT-5951ATL SFF 1310nm fiber optic transceiver and single-mode optical fiber, so that 400Mbps asynchronous communications reached 680 meters while isochronous communications were extended up to the 1,000 meter mark. Isochronous communications can reach extended node-to-node lengths because no acknowledge receipts is required as in asynchronous mode.
These optical interfaces are available on PC104+ form factor and can now be implemented on all other of Mindready's 1394b hardware adapters, thus catering to a broader range of IEEE-1394b application needs.
The potential applications are vast, especially when high-bandwidth guaranteed communications are needed while requiring to span enhanced distances between nodes. Possible applications include, for example, life-threatening industrial or aerospace/defense environments where the operator must remain distant from the data capture area.
