Insignia Helps Define Over-The-Air Java Device Management Standards

12/15/2003 - Insignia Solutions® (Nasdaq: INSG), announced that it has joined two new JSR (Java Specification Request) expert groups called JSR-232 and JSR-233 to help define how mobile Java devices can be upgraded over-the-air using a dynamic architecture. The new standards will leverage existing efforts underway by the Open Mobile Alliance and OSGi and enable mobile operators and device manufacturers to better manage device capabilities remotely using secure over-the-air connections. This will enable reduced support and deployment costs as well as the ability to provide new Java based mobile services to existing populations of devices.

Insignia is the only company providing over-the-air software upgrades to mobile devices that is active in both the Open Mobile Alliance standards efforts and the Java Community Process (JCP). Insignia is one of fifteen companies in the world that holds a voting JCP Executive Committee seat for all mobile Java standards.

"Our leadership efforts in driving standardization as well as innovation in this space is single strategy that spans a variety of standards organizations," said Peter Bernard, chief product officer of Insignia, "This holistic approach, as well as working in concert with other companies such as IBM, Nokia and Motorola, provides our customers with solutions that are state-of-art and allow the maximum re-use of their infrastructure."

The standards efforts directly enhance Insignia's flagship product, Insignia Secure System Provisioning (SSP). SSP is a powerful server software infrastructure product that provides an end-to-end firmware update system for mobile operators and phone manufacturers. SSP reduces bottom line software recall costs by enabling Over-The-Air Repair and increases top line revenues by providing Dynamic Capabilities to enable a wide range of new mobile services to existing devices.
