12/15/2003 - Express Logic, Inc., the worldwide leader in royalty-free real-time operating systems (RTOS), announced that its ThreadX® RTOS has topped the 50 million unit mark, thanks in great measure to its use in many HP consumer inkjet printers and all-in-one devices.
Express Logic’s ThreadX RTOS and its FileXTM embedded file system was selected by HP in 2001 and designed into select HP printer products. Since then, more than 50 million HP inkjet printers running ThreadX have been shipped.
“We’re very proud to see our ThreadX RTOS used in so many high-volume products that are used everyday by millions of consumers,” commented William E. Lamie, President of Express Logic. “We greatly appreciate HP’s extensive use of ThreadX in their printers, and we’re honored to be an important part of these market-leading products.”
"HP selected Express Logic's ThreadX RTOS based on its ease of use," commented Marcus Scholz, section manager, Imaging and Printing Group at HP. "HP is pleased with the support that Express Logic has provided and the way in which ThreadX has helped HP to get to market quickly."
In addition to HP’s shipments, there are an estimated 10 million ThreadX RTOS shipments annually in other consumer, networking, and medical devices, making Express Logic’s ThreadX one of the most widely deployed RTOSes in the world.
ThreadX controls all operations of a printer, running on an embedded 32-bit microprocessor, handling image management, pixel interpolation, motor control, and graphical user interface. Thanks to its small size, ThreadX easily resides in available ROM memory, keeping manufacturing costs to a bare minimum. ThreadX meets performance needs without requiring a faster, more expensive processor to keep up.
Many printers feature memory card slots that enable consumers to print directly from most any digital camera – no PC required. This is enabled by using an industry standard file format, introduced with MS-DOS, that allows the memory card and the printer to “talk” the same computer language and share access to image files. Express Logic’s FileX file system runs with ThreadX in printers and provides MS-DOS compatible file access for portable media like memory sticks and other flash memory devices. Like ThreadX, Express Logic’s FileX is royalty-free, and occupies a scant 5KB of ROM.
ThreadX and FileX are provided in full source code form and are licensed per project, with no run-time royalties. Contact Express Logic for project pricing information.
