12/10/2003 - Artesyn Communication Products, a subsidiary of Artesyn Technologies (NASDAQ:ATSN), announced that it has received TL 9000 Release 3.0 registration. TL 9000 is an industry standard that specifies requirements and measurements for validating telecommunications quality.
Artesyn Communication Product's TL 9000 registration encompasses its telecom products and processes at both its Madison, WI headquarters and Edinburgh, Scotland software engineering center. The registration enhances Artesyn's competitive position by demonstrating that it has the quality processes, metrics and continuous improvement demanded by telecom OEMs, a growing number of whom require TL 9000 certification.
TL 9000 is an extension of ISO 9000 for the telecommunications industry. Developed by the QuEST (Quality Excellence for Suppliers of Telecommunications) Forum, a group of more than 150 leading service providers and suppliers, TL 9000 defines quality system requirements for the design, development, production, delivery, installation and maintenance of telecommunications products and services.
TL 9000 applies to an estimated 10,000 telecommunications suppliers around the world, with annual purchases of $50-$100 billion dollars. QuEST believes that TL 9000 will eventually displace other telecommunications quality management standards, creating a single standard that reduces costs for all stakeholders.
"TL 9000 is the standard for telecommunications quality, and will soon become a requirement for selling telecom equipment," said Michael Sullivan, vice president of quality at Artesyn Communication Products. "Many leading service providers and service provider OEMs are already requiring their suppliers to become registered."
Companies desiring TL 9000 registration must first meet the requirements of ISO 9001:2000. Then, they must meet 81 additional TL 9000 requirements. Included are performance and cost-based metrics that measure reliability and quality performance for products and services.
"Our TL 9000 process development has been a resounding success," noted Sullivan. "In our initial audit, we received zero nonconformances. Upgrading an existing ISO 9001:1994 quality management system to meet ISO 9001:2000 plus the 81 TL 9000 requirements without any adverse findings is a remarkable accomplishment."
