Intel Capital Makes Strategic Investment in StarGen

12/10/2003 - StarGen, a semiconductor company that is a leader in advanced serial switched interconnect solutions, announced that it has received a strategic investment from Intel Capital.

StarGen, founded in 1999, will use this investment to continue its development of the StarXpress product line based on PCI Express and Advanced Switching (AS). StarGen has previously announced its development of switches and bridges in its StarXpress product family, which will provide switched interconnect solutions for storage, server, communications and embedded applications.

"The Advanced Switching specification is important because it will standardize switch fabric architectures in communication, storage and embedded equipment, leading to shorter design cycles," said Eric Mentzer, chief technology officer, Intel Communications Group. "Meeting customer interconnectivity requirements allows for computing and communications architectures to be combined, providing a foundation for industry innovation and expansion."

"StarGen continues to enjoy working with Intel in developing the next industry standard for system interconnects based on serial switching technologies. PCI Express and Advanced Switching open powerful new system architecture options for our industry and will provide the capability of truly converging basic system building blocks across the compute and communication marketplaces," said Tracy Richardson, CEO and co-founder of StarGen. "Our collaboration leverages StarGen's innovation and experience in low overhead, switched interconnect solutions with Intel's market leadership in promoting industry standard initiatives."

The strategic investment from Intel follows the recent announcement of StarGen's $16 million in third round funding provided by Morgenthaler Ventures, St. Paul Venture Capital, Commonwealth Capital Ventures, The Boston University Community Technology Fund, Ironside Ventures and CommVest. In July 1999, StarGen received $6 million in seed round funding, and, in July 2000, it received $20 million in Series B funding.
