United Airlines Flies with TimesTen Real-Time Infrastructure Software

12/2/2003 - TimesTen, Inc., a provider of infrastructure software for real-time applications, announced that United Airlines (OTCBB: UALAQ.OB) has deployed the TimesTen® Real-Time Event Processing System as the Operations Data Store (ODS) for "day of operations" information. The ODS serves as the single source of data, 7x24x365, supporting multiple applications worldwide that rely on the accuracy and timeliness of operational data. The ODS is currently in production for a number of applications, including flight status, crew scheduling, gate information displays, and a real-time executive dashboard. Over time, ODS usage could be extended to baggage handling, flight dispatching, air traffic management, catering and maintenance-related functions. Many of these applications are focused on improving the overall passenger experience, and have contributed to helping United achieve the #1 on-time performance ranking among all major U.S. airlines.

"The airline industry has faced some tough challenges over the last few years and United is certainly no exception," said John Byrne, director applications development, United Airlines. "However, we remain focused on maintaining a competitive advantage with our IT infrastructure because it's essential to how we run our business and please our customers. Our industry is time-critical, so we needed a proven solution such as TimesTen to deliver the high-volume, high-performance software infrastructure necessary to give us an edge in the market place," added Byrne.

"TimesTen is best suited for applications that must process massive volumes of business events, deliver instant response, and can never go down," said Jim Groff, CEO, TimesTen, Inc. "The airlines, and transportation and logistics in general, are great examples of real-time businesses. These are 24 hour, 7 day-a-week enterprises dependent upon up-to-the-second information to manage extremely complex operations. We are pleased that United has chosen TimesTen as a crucial part of their infrastructure," added Groff.
