Sleepycat Software Offers Enhanced Java Support in Berkeley DB 4.2
11/26/2003 - Sleepycat Software, makers of Berkeley DB - the most widely used application-specific data management software in the world with over 200 million deployments - announced the general availability of Berkeley DB version 4.2 with a new Java API based on the existing Java collections standard and enhanced replication for high availability applications.
The latest version of Berkeley DB makes it easier and faster for developers to build Java applications. Developers may now access and index data stored in Berkeley DB using an API they already know. This collections API enables developers to create data storage solutions quickly and easily. In addition, new replication enhancements make the feature faster, more efficient, and easier to implement.
"Sleepycat is strategically committed to Java," said Michael Olson, CEO of Sleepycat. "More and more of our customers are using Java for big systems, so we have made it easier for them to create Java applications that rely on Berkeley DB for data management. In addition, many of our customers are using Berkeley DB in 'six 9's' environments, so we have made it easier for developers to add replication-based high availability into their applications."
Sleepycat Software already has several customers using Berkeley DB version 4.2 in critical applications for telecommunications, Internet infrastructure, online gaming and financial services.
Valve Software, developer of the award-winning games Half-Life® and Counter-StrikeTM, uses the latest version of Berkeley DB within the SteamTM platform for delivering content and games on the Internet to millions of players around the world.
"Steam users expect a fast and uninterrupted gaming experience that works 24x7," said Chris Newcombe, senior engineer at Valve. "Berkeley DB gives us a fast, scalable data manager with high availability and replication under extremely high loads."
Gemini Mobile Technologies develops high performance infrastructure software for wireless carriers and is using Berkeley DB for its mobile messaging product.
"Gemini's HyperScaleTM products deliver carrier-grade reliability and scalability combined with superior cost-performance," said Michael Tso, vice president of engineering for Gemini Mobile Technologies. "We selected Berkeley DB as part of our user profile management system. It nicely complemented our HyperScaleTM products and Sleepycat's support was excellent."
The key new features and benefits of Berkeley DB version 4.2 include:
- A new Java collections API that allows groups of Java objects to be easily stored, updated and queried in a transactional, recoverable and concurrent manner. This new feature makes it easier for programmers to store and retrieve Java objects by eliminating the need to learn a new API and enabling greater reuse and interoperability with other APIs. This new API was modeled closely after the collections API introduced in the 1.2 release of the J2SE Java Standard.
- Replication enhancements that run much faster and more efficiently through automatic weighted-peer negotiation for election to a new master, the ability for servers coming back online to re-join the live production environment and enhanced failure detection and management, along with automatic replication sync-up upon election of a new master.
