BSQUARE Speeds to Market with Windows Mobile Engineering Services

11/26/2003 - Demonstrating strength and momentum for Microsoft Windows Mobile software for Smartphones and Pocket PCs, BSQUARE (Nasdaq: BSQR) announced five engineering service engagements, worth over $3 million, with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the U.S. and with original device manufacturers (ODMs) in Asia. The devices range from a rugged militarized Smartphone to a Pocket PC-based industrial data collection device. Leveraging BSQUARE’s deep expertise in building solutions for Windows Mobile, each manufacturer is now able to minimize their project risk, while bringing their product to market quickly and cost effectively.

"BSQUARE has been a major contributor to the growth of the Windows Mobile software platform, providing OEMs with critical engineering services such as systems integration, driver development and application porting," said Clark Butler, group marketing manager in the Mobile Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. "As a founding member of MPAC, BSQUARE is at the forefront of technical developments in Windows Mobile software, and helps us meet the needs of our mutual customers and device manufacturers."

"We are experiencing significant market demand from OEMs for our engineering services consulting group to assist with Windows Mobile software development," said Mark Schoenhals, director of Windows Mobile business development for BSQUARE. "Our device experience across more than 100 engineers and project managers is unparalleled, enabling us to bring the best problem solving skills in the industry to resolve complex device development issues– such as system power management, audio driver development, and radio interface layer integration– for OEMs."

A Wide Range of Windows Mobile Solution Engagements
BSQUARE’s engineering service group is working closely with OEMs and ODMs on a wide range of device development projects utilizing Windows Mobile:

Texas Instruments recently engaged BSQUARE’s software engineering services to assist one of the top mobile phone handset makers in the world. BSQUARE ported Windows Mobile 2003 software for Smartphone to the handset manufacturer’s TI OMAP processor-based device. BSQUARE engineers continue to work on-site at the customer’s facility to develop drivers and troubleshoot ongoing issues. Separately, BSQUARE developed drivers for a new wireless terminal device based on Windows Mobile.

"As an independent OMAP Technology Center, BSQUARE engineering services support OMAP platform customer development projects that require industry leading expertise on Windows Mobile software," said Paul Werp, worldwide director of marketing for the OMAP platform, Texas Instruments. "BSQUARE enables both TI and our customers to cut development time, creating uniquely optimized products that push the mobile market forward in terms of quality of service and extended battery life."

A global leader in the design and manufacture of image-based data collection solutions engaged BSQUARE as a strategic outsourcing partner to develop a device, first for Windows Mobile 2002 software and later for Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PCs. Starting with Intel® XScale™-based hardware reference design technology developed by BSQUARE, the manufacturer brought BSQUARE in to port the Pocket PC bootloader and kernel. BSQUARE also supplied low-level system software support and developed drivers for audio, USB, display, wireless LAN, and SD memory slot.

A U.S.-based developer of militarized handheld devices also based its development efforts on BSQUARE’s hardware reference design technology. BSQUARE ported Windows Mobile to the target device, and then worked closely with Intel to support specific applications by porting Intel’s advanced video display codecs to the Windows Mobile platform.

A large Taiwanese ODM, representing one of the world’s best-known OEM brand names in electronics, also engaged BSQUARE for a Windows Mobile-based development project. Beginning with the Intel® XScale™-based hardware reference design, BSQUARE customized the platform and ported it to Windows Powered Handheld PC as well as applications and middleware.
