11/21/2003 - Intermec Technologies Corp. announced the availability of two software development packages designed to give customers and partners more flexibility to create mobile computing applications. Studio EDGE and Studio COM, developed by Wavelink Corp., are available directly from Intermec and support its 700 Series mobile computers.
Studio COM allows programmers to quickly create wireless LAN applications for mobile computers by providing familiar development environments that eliminate the need for programmers to learn new languages. Studio COM supports mobile computers that use a variety of operating systems including Microsoft Corp.’s DOS, Windows CE and Pocket PC. It includes a library of nearly 400 commonly referenced methods and objects to save development time and supports all COM-based languages, including Visual Basic®, Visual C®, Visual FoxPro®, DelphiTM and PowerBuilder®. Applications are run from the server, so each individual client device does not have to be updated when modifications are made.
Studio EDGE is an application development tool for the Java environment. Applications can operate in any combination of batch, wide-area wireless and wireless LAN mode. Applications are created using a single graphical user interface that supports multiple types of mobile computers. Existing HTML code can be incorporated directly into Studio EDGE applications to provide a convenient, browser-like user interface regardless of connection mode.
Both packages will soon add support for Intermec’s new CK 30 mobile computer.
“Wavelink’s software helps customers get more out of their Intermec computers by helping them create applications quickly in a familiar environment, without paying for customized software development,” said Intermec Vice President Mike Colwell. “The ability to upgrade applications without handling each client device, and the support of multiple computing environments, makes integration and system management very cost effective.”
“Our application development tools are a natural complement to Intermec’s industrial mobile computers because of the commitment we share to creating solutions that are convenient for users to create, maintain and upgrade,” said Dave Bullis, president and chief executive of Wavelink. “Intermec products have a lot of innovations and features, and we’re pleased to help customers take advantage of them.”
Studio COM and Studio EDGE are available through Intermec and its indirect sales channel. Wavelink’s Avalanche device management software also is available from Intermec as part of a previously announced agreement.
