11/20/2003 - Ulticom, Inc. (NASDAQ: ULCM), a leading provider of telecommunications signaling software that enables mobility, location, payment, switching, and messaging services, announced an expanded relationship with Funk Software, a developer of leading Wireless LAN (WLAN) security solutions. Under a signed Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) agreement, Ulticom's Signalware will power Funk Software's Steel-Belted Radius®/SS7 Gateway, which gives mobile operators a quick and cost-effective solution to offer their subscribers secure WLAN hotspot access. Telecommunication Services Inc. (TSI), a global communications technology company specializing in innovative business and network engineering solutions, has tested and deployed this solution.
Funk Software's solution enables Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) operators to fully leverage their existing mobility, customer care, and billing infrastructure to offer public WLAN services. By utilizing proven procedures in GSM networks and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)-defined protocol EAP-SIM, subscribers can roam into WLANs and seamlessly access their network-based communication services from a single, trusted source.
Funk Software's market-leading, RADIUS/AAA server Steel-Belted Radius uses Signalware SS7 to provide authentication and authorization services by converting WLAN access requests into GSM MAP/SS7 messages. Signalware's proven network interoperability, with its unique advantage of exceeding 1600 deployments in over 300 carrier networks, promotes confidence in the solution.
"Funk Software chose Signalware for its carrier-grade attributes and global interoperability," said Joe Ryan, Vice President of Funk Software. "Signalware's comprehensive APIs and robust platform features are a natural fit with Steel-Belted Radius. We are pleased to have signed this agreement and are looking forward to the successful completion of trials of the solution, currently underway with operators and service bureaus around the globe."
"Earlier this year, TSI launched a global, corporate initiative to increase Wi-Fi usage and to ultimately drive revenue increases for industry players in the Wi-Fi market," said Michael O'Brien, TSI Vice President of Marketing. "We had the roaming, clearing and settlement solutions in place to make the Wi-Fi business model profitable for wireless operators. With the addition of Funk Software's Steel-Belted Radius/SS7 Gateway, enabled by Ulticom's Signalware, we now offer secure public WLAN access for GSM operators, rounding out our end-to-end solution in North America as well as Europe."
"Adding wireless LAN access as an extension to existing mobility services enables operators to provide a compelling value proposition for their subscribers," said Osman Duman, Vice President of Marketing at Ulticom. "Funk Software's leadership position in Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA), combined with their end-to-end wireless LAN security solutions, make them a leading company in this market."
