Multi-Tech Rolls Out Company's First Cellular Wireless Products

11/19/2003 - Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a leading data communications and telecommunications company based in suburban Minneapolis, is shipping its first cellular wireless products. The new products include embedded and external models utilizing GSM/GPRS technologies used to communicate data and voice over worldwide cellular communication networks. The company’s embedded models can be used by other developers to add wireless communications capabilities with a minimum of time and expense, while the external models can be used for applications needing a complete wireless modem equipped with an industry standard RS232 interface. European models are now shipping, and U.S. versions are expected at the first of next year.

“Our GSM/GPRS wireless cellular models are of particular interest to multinational companies,” states Chip Harleman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. “The reason is that the basic hardware is generic with carrier specific requirements contained within a SIM card. This allows for only two hardware models, North America and ROW, to cover most of the world. Local activation is then a matter of obtaining a SIM card from a local carrier. The GSM/GPRS technology also allows for changing hardware without requiring provisioning new equipment, because all you have to do is use the old SIM card. With Multi-Tech’s 30 plus year tradition of providing business-oriented communications products, cellular wireless was a natural choice. That is because it is most often associated with business applications needing geographical continuity for dispersed applications, and the security of traditional data communication. We believe cellular wireless solutions will continue to provide the best answers to business needs in the future, and our newly announced products prepare us for that future.”
