AvantGo Survey Identifies Preferences of Tech-savvy Mobile Users

11/14/2003 - In anticipation of this year's holiday shopping season, a recent survey conducted by AvantGo® entirely on personal digital assistants (PDAs) reveals the shopping habits, retail preferences and wish lists of today's tech-savvy mobile professionals. The new AvantGo survey shows continued growth in online shopping as well as an emerging trend to bring PDAs when shopping in person, making it easier to review gift lists and online product information. Respondents name flat-screen TVs, digital cameras and smartphones as this year's hot products, and in the spirit of the holidays, 53% list world peace as their number one wish.

"Holiday shopping has been transformed by the Internet," said Neil Versen, senior director of AvantGo at iAnywhere Solutions. "Already shoppers rely on the Internet to conduct research and make purchases. This survey now indicates that tech-savvy professionals are bringing their PDAs when shopping at stores, offering an exciting new opportunity to deliver coupons, promotions and product information to the palm of shoppers' hands."

All of the survey respondents shop online, including 88% percent who plan to maintain or increase their online shopping. Although 85% conduct shopping research at manufacturers' sites, 71% percent turn to shopping sites such as Amazon.com or Buy.com to make purchases. On the brick-and-mortar front, 90% of respondents bring their PDAs when shopping at stores and are most interested in receiving product reviews, competitive comparisons and coupons via mobile devices. More than half of respondents expect to spend over $400 this season on gifts, including a majority who plan to buy PDA accessories such as flash card expansions, Wi-Fi cards, stylus pens and digital PDA cameras.
