Sony Certifies California Micro Devices as Green Partner

11/13/2003 - California Micro Devices (NASDAQ: CAMD), a leading supplier of Application Specific Integrated PassiveTM (ASIPTM) devices for the mobile, computing and consumer electronics markets, announced it had received Sony Corporation's (NYSE: SNE) Green Partner certification. The certification recognizes that California Micro Devices has successfully established a worldwide environmental management system meeting the standards of the Sony Green Partner Program. California Micro Devices is one of the first companies to receive this certification from Sony. Earlier this year, Sony announced it would limit its procurement of products and materials to only those suppliers that have qualified as Green Partners.

Sony’s Green Partner Program
Sony established its Green Partner Standards in July 2001 with the goal of encouraging suppliers to introduce Green Partner environmental management systems. In March 2002, Sony established a set of “Management regulations for environment-related substances to be controlled which are included in parts and materials.” Environment-related substances to be immediately banned or reduced were identified, and further clarified in the Sony “Green Partner Environmental Quality Approval Program.” In order to receive certification, companies are required to:

California Micro Devices’ Lead Free Initiatives
On August 25, 2003, California Micro Devices announced its lead free mobile products initiative, becoming the first manufacturer to offer a complete portfolio of lead free Application Specific Integrated PassiveTM (ASIPTM) products for wireless handsets and PDAs. Today, in a separate release, California Micro Devices announced that initial lead free versions of its popular ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection, EMI (electromagnetic interference) filtering and power management devices for PC and consumer products are already sampling with key customers. Samples of all of California Micro Devices’ PC and consumer products will be available in lead free package options by Q104, with the most popular available by Q403.
