11/12/2003 - PowerDsine®, the leader in Power over Ethernet (PoE) solutions, announced availability of the new PD64012 12-Channel Power over Ethernet Manager developed jointly with Motorola. The PD64012 is the first and only complete PoE solution on an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC).
The IEEE 802.3af-compliant chip is based on a winning-combination of PowerDsine's PoE market leadership and Motorola's SMARTMOS8TM technology, integrating power, analog and advanced digital logic functions into one device. Its use in Ethernet switches and midspans -an alternative for power sourcing equipment - will allow next generation network devices to share power and data over the same cable.
"By easing the deployment of networks, especially for wireless LANs and IP phones, PoE reduces costly AC installations and building out extensive UPS systems," said Dave Passmore, research director of The Burton Group. "As the Ethernet extends to new applications, such as the industrial automation and controls, PoE will continue to open up the door for new Ethernet applications. Now that the standard is ratified, we will see a surge of PoE innovation."
Big Implications for the Switch Market
The PD64012 12-port Power over Ethernet Manager is designed by PowerDsine and Motorola to minimize the number of external components and reduce overall system costs. PowerDsine succeeded in reducing the number of components by 80% compared to previous generations of PoE solutions, simplifying switch vendors' test procedures and making the solution more reliable.
"With over 30 design-ins at the major Ethernet switch manufacturers, PowerDsine is determined to provide our current and new customers with the best and most cost-effective PoE solution on the market," said chief executive officer of PowerDsine, Igal Rotem. "The PD64012 represents a technological triumph that will benefit all switch vendors and sets the highest standard possible as the PoE market continues to grow."
With embedded power management, PD64012 enables Ethernet switches to use their power supply much more efficiently, enabling switch manufacturers to reduce the power supply unit cost up to 50%. Switch manufacturers can realize such dramatic cost reductions because each piece of silicon requires only four external components per port. Considered a major technological achievement, the solution integrates the per-channel Field Effect Transistor (FET) directly into the ASIC. PowerDsine and Motorola are the only companies worldwide to have accomplished this engineering feat.
"Having a working part with 12 integrated MOSFETs clearly demonstrates what is possible by combining PowerDsine's PoE systems expertise with the outstanding integration potential of the SMARTMOS8 technology," said Ciaran Connell, Director of marketing for Motorola's Analog Products Division.
Additionally, the PD64012 is the only 12-port integrated solution available on the market (others are only four and eight ports), simplifying implementation, design and taking up less space on the board. It enables building self maintained, autonomous 48-port solutions with detection, real-time port protection and AC or DC disconnection.
Samples of the PD64012 12-Channel PoE Manager are immediately available. Production for shipment is expected to commence in first quarter 2004. The device is fully IEEE 802.3af-2003 compliant and also works with pre- standard proprietary solutions.
About Power over Ethernet Technology
PoE is a technology for wired Ethernet, the most widely installed local area network technology in use today. PoE allows the electrical power necessary for the operation of each device, to be carried by data cables rather than by power cords. It minimizes the number of wires that must be strung in order to install the network, resulting in lower cost, less downtime, easier maintenance and greater installation flexibility.
PoE potentially reduces the cost of installing wireless LAN access points by up to 50 percent. Because the network switches also can deliver power through the standard Ethernet infrastructure, the need to connect each access point to a separate electrical circuit and install additional AC power outlets is eliminated. Beyond cost effectiveness, PoE also can provide customers with uninterruptible power for critical applications such as IP (Internet protocol) phones, security cameras, entry loggers and other powered data terminals.
PowerDsine (www.powerdsine.com) is the world leader in Power over Ethernet technology, providing the ability to deliver both power and data over a single network cable. PowerDsine offers converged power and data solutions to corporate users via its own range of equipment and via OEM agreements with the leading communications equipment manufacturers. PowerDsine's product line offers a variety of Power over Ethernet midspan devices as well as integrated solutions, which are embedded directly into Ethernet switches. PowerDsine holds 85 percent share of the midspan market and a 50 percent share of the integrated solutions market. The company was a founding member of the IEEE 802.3af Task Force.
