Vitesse Expands 10 Gbps Ethernet MACs Portfolio

11/11/2003 - Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: VTSS) broadened its family of high-performance, multi-purpose Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 10 Gigabit Ethernet Media Access Controllers (MACs) by introducing the Meigs-IIeTM (VSC7323). To further enhance the functionality of its MAC product line and aid OEMs in rapid deployment of Gigabit Ethernet, Vitesse also announced the availability of its MAC Application Software.

Meigs-IIe builds upon the industry success of Meigs-IITM (VSC7321) by adding additional frame buffering capability and support for the Reduced Gigabit Media Independent Interface (RGMII). The addition of the RGMII interface reduces the design complexity and lowers the overall system cost versus implementations using GMII. Per port cost savings are further realized when combining the RGMII interface with the flexibility of the integrated GbE serializer/ deserializer (SERDES) interfaces for high density copper and optical Ethernet applications.

For added functionality, Meigs-IIe, as well as the entire Vitesse MAC portfolio, incorporates the MAC Application Software (MAS). MAS simplifies the control and configuration of Vitesse’s MAC solutions by providing a well defined operating system and processor independent application-programming interface (API). The MAC Application Software is easily incorporated into the user's software, be it a user space application or driver. It is also portable across target operating systems, and enables the host application to use a limited set of API function calls and data structures to control the MAC device. The diagnostic functions of the MAC Application Software accelerate hardware debug and system deployment of the Vitesse MAC devices in the target environment. Compatibility of the MAC Application Software across the Vitesse MAC product family protects the software investment of system OEMs as different devices are selected within the product portfolio.

Meigs-IIe is designed for use in modular Ethernet switch platforms as well as emerging Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH (EoS) applications when used in conjunction with the Vitesse VSC9118. The VSC9118 is the industry’s highest density, OC-192 channelized, multi-service mapper supporting both frame-based and transparent-based Generic Frame Procedure (GFP). Together, Meigs-IIe and VSC9118 provide five times the port density of other currently available products, thereby reducing the deployment cost of Ethernet services in Metro networks.

Meigs-IIe combines ten, triple-speed (10/100/1000 Mbps) ports, a single 10 GbE port with an integrated XAUI interface, and an OIF-compliant SPI-4.2 System Interface to form the industry’s highest density 10Gbps MAC. The additional per port buffering capability provided by Meigs-IIe allows loss-less flow control in Metro networks up to 10 Km, thus preventing packet loss due to a client exceeding their provisioned service level. Meigs-IIe operates over the industrial temperature range of -40C to +85°C and is available in a 728-pin TBGA package.

It is priced at $225 each in volume quantities. Samples are available now with production quantities available in March 2004.
