11/11/2003 - PMC-Sierra(TM), Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS - News) announced the PM8380 QuadSMX 3G Gigabit-serial interconnect supporting the recently approved Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) industry standard for storage system and hard disk drive interfaces. The QuadSMX 3G is a four channel, bi-directional 2:1 multiplexer/demultiplexer operating at 3.0 Gbit/s. The device provides storage and server equipment makers with a high-performance, robust and cost-effective Gigabit-serial interface solution for Enterprise IT equipment applications such as SAS host-controller signal steering to internal or external storage targets, signal repeating and level shifting.
SAS Enables Storage Vendors to Transition to Serial Technologies
Building on the broad industry adoption and large installed base of parallel-SCSI storage, the SAS standard enables the migration of SCSI-based systems to Gigabit-serial interconnect technology. Leveraging the electrical and physical interface from the Serial ATA (SATA) industry standard, SAS provides enterprise-class performance and reliability while protecting the industry's extensive SCSI software investment.
"Serial Attached SCSI enables a new generation of storage systems by leveraging proven SCSI technology and delivering Serial ATA compatibility at the connector level," said Harry Mason, president of the SCSI Trade Association and director of Industry Marketing for LSI Logic Corporation. "New product offerings, like PMC-Sierra's, will improve the market adoption of this new generation of high performance serial interfaces."
Industry Standard Device Provides Robust Signal Integrity and Optimized Solution
Manufactured in 0.18um CMOS technology, the QuadSMX 3G is optimized for low power, small footprint and advanced signal integrity. The product supports both 3.0 and 1.5 Gbit/s operation and is electrically compliant with the SAS 1.0 and SATA I/II industry standard specifications. The QuadSMX 3G incorporates programmable per-port transmit pre-emphasis and receive equalization with on-chip terminations to provide optimal signal integrity, low bill of materials and smallest system footprint. The product supports auto-detect or programmable output swing level control for seamless interconnect to SATA I, SATA II or SAS hard disk drives. The QuadSMX 3G functionality can be either pin-strapped or user programmed through a serial interface.
"The QuadSMX 3G leverages PMC-Sierra's industry proven multi gigabit serial expertise to deliver a product optimized for the SAS market with excellent signal integrity, low power and design flexibility," said Mark Stibitz, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Enterprise Storage Division. "PMC-Sierra is working closely with the industry leaders to help enable the widespread deployment of SAS-based enterprise storage systems."
