IONA Supports Java 2 Enterprise Edition with Orbix Connect

11/11/2003 - IONA® (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in high performance integration solutions for mission critical IT environments, advanced its support for the Java 2, Enterprise EditionTM (J2EETM) platform with the introduction of Orbix ConnectTM and a new strategic alliance the JBoss Group.

Enterprise customers depend heavily on IONA to understand how they have built their software applications, and to make them work together. IONA recognizes the broad acceptance of J2EE among large organizations - and with the introduction of Orbix Connect, its partnership with the JBoss Group, and recent delivery of the ArtixTM product family - is poised to help customers achieve a return on their J2EE and other enterprise software investments today, while helping them build a service-oriented integration architecture suited for the future.

"Java 2, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technology is one of the most widely adopted and popular standards-driven platforms for server-based, n-Tier application development, and as a result, forms an important core of many companies' service orientation strategies," said Ron Schmelzer, senior analyst, ZapThink LLC. "Organizations with enterprise-level integration requirements will need to work with vendors who can make J2EE and other enterprise technologies work together in a way that leverages software assets today and builds an architecture capable of supporting tomorrow's needs. IONA, with its robust enterprise integration capabilities, its new alliance with the JBoss Group and its introduction of Orbix Connect, demonstrates that it is can provide that platform of continuing IT value."

To address the J2EE to CORBA® interoperability problem, IONA has developed Orbix ConnectTM, a new standards based offering that removes cost and complexity by achieving transparent and seamless J2EE to CORBA connectivity. Orbix ConnectTM allows Java developers to leverage CORBA investments without vendor specific knowledge by simplifying the connectivity process. The standards-based connector architecture encompasses all the details of packaging, deployment and configuration, thereby allowing these CORBA elements to be hidden from the developers.

Together, Orbix Connect and IONA's new alliance with JBoss Group (see separate release issued today: "JBoss Group and IONA Announce Strategic Alliance") offer IONA customers and other large organizations new, more flexible, and cost-efficient opportunities to realize value and business advantage from their CORBA and J2EE investments.

"Our strategic alliance with IONA represents more than an acknowledgement that IONA is superbly positioned to provide enterprise levels of support to JBoss users. I also believe that IONA's approach to enterprise integration helps large organizations make optimal use of their JBoss investments in their demanding IT environments," said Bob Bickel, JBoss Group, Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development. "As evidence of this, IONA's Orbix Connect is a unique solution for the many J2EE developers who need to productively leverage existing CORBA assets. Products like Orbix Connect, coupled with IONA's enterprise perspective on J2EE, enable IONA to present a compelling value proposition to the J2EE community."

"J2EE is an extremely important technology for today's enterprise and will continue to play a major role in the future of application development," said Scott Devens, Vice President of IONA's Products Business Unit. "IONA's products and services are directed to making J2EE work with past, present, and future enterprise technologies in a cost-effective and standards-driven manner. Our close alignment with the JBoss Group and delivery of Orbix Connect reinforce that direction and compliment our decade long success 'Making Software Work Together' for more than 4,500 customers and partners."
