11/10/2003 - HP (NYSE:HPQ) introduced DVD writers with improved performance, broad format compatibility and a dramatic increase in write speed compared to its previous models.
Writing DVDs at speeds of up to eight times the normal DVD playback speed, the new HP DVD Writer dvd400i and HP DVD Writer dvd400e let consumers preserve and edit video, store photos, record music and back up and transport information on DVDs and CDs fast and easily. In addition, the DVD writers and included software allow amateur video producers and heavy storage users to quickly record a DVD disc and then move on to the next project.
Both DVD writers are built on +R/+RW technology, the format that is offered on the leading DVD burners and is compatible with most DVD players and DVD-ROMs tested.(1) Compared to dual-format or -R/-RW drives, +R/+RW format drives also provide consumers greater video editing flexibility with simplified writing and editing methods. Focusing on the +R/+RW format lets HP take advantage of the latest technological advances in the most widely adopted standard, such as 8x DVD write speed, while avoiding the additional costs and complications of dual-format drives.
"HP is committed to developing DVD technology that is easy to use and supports the most popular format," said Christine Roby, DVD product manager, Personal Systems Group, HP. "The HP dvd400i and dvd400e simplify and speed up writing and editing video, photos, data and music. The included software also makes it much easier to create entertaining DVDs to share with family and friends."
Both the internal (dvd400i) and external (dvd400e) drives let users back up and archive data, store digital photos and create a personal video archive on high-capacity DVD+R/+RW discs featuring up to 4.7 gigabytes of storage capacity. The HP dvd400e drive also offers the flexibility of working through an IEEE1394 or USB 2.0 connection; cables for both interfaces are included.
The drives feature write speeds of 8x on a DVD +R disc, 4x on a DVD +RW disc, 24x on a CD-R and 10x on a CD-RW disc. Additionally, the drives feature a 12x DVD read speed and a 32x CD read speed.
Both drives feature video editing software packages, including ArcSoft ShowBiz 2 and muvee autoProducer. ArcSoft ShowBiz 2 is a complete video editing and DVD authoring application designed to let users create and edit DVD videos and photo/video slideshows with drag-and-drop ease. Muvee autoProducer is a fun and easy to use editing software package that quickly turns digital movies into music videos.
The HP dvd400i and dvd400e also come with Sonic RecordNow and SimpleBackup, software that is designed to save data, photos, video or music on DVDs and CDs. Also included is the Cyberlink PowerDVD software, which makes it easy to play DVD movies on a PC. In addition, both devices ship with a blank DVD+R 8x disc.
The HP DVD Writer dvd400i is expected to be available at hpshopping.com and major retail outlets in the United States this month at an estimated U.S. street price of $199, while the HP DVD Writer dvd400e is expected to be available in December at an estimated U.S. street price of $279.(2) HP brand 8x DVD+R discs also are expected to be available in November.
