ERNI Introduces SMT Version of Angled D-Sub Connectors

11/10/2003 - ERNI has launched a new design for angled SMT D-Sub connectors. The new modular design improves functionality and allows easy generation of a large diversity of low cost variants.

Allowing for dependable customer-side processing was a priority during specification and design of the product; the new SMT version is so robust that it can be processed in bulk materials without any influence on co-planarity. Rugged support is ensured through a form-fitting bolt that anchors the new D-Sub connectors.

The new line of D-Sub connectors is available with 9, 15, 25 and 37 pins in both standard (7.3 mm) and Eurostyle (3.6 mm) mounting heights. The ERNI module approach contains also press-fitting or THR versions. Further design improvements such as improved and more economical use of materials when punching, translate into gains in production time and lower costs.

The new D-Sub connectors can be delivered in SMT-compatible trays or tape-on-reel packaging for fully automated fitting. An insulating sleeve facilitates simple camera recognition and a large pick-and-place surface enables easy and dependable pick-up with the vacuum pipette. It is made of high-temperature resistant thermoplastic and is suitable for soldering with all commonly used SMT soldering processes.

The optimized position of the center of gravity and the positioning pins hold the D-Sub in place during soldering. The solid SMT fitting bracket with a broad soldering surface ensures that push and pull forces and other mechanical influences are safely absorbed. The fitting accessories are pre-mounted and secured against loss.

The new D-Sub connector generation conforms to the mandatory lead-free surface standard scheduled to be effective July 2006.
