Parasoft Verifies 508 Compliance for Web Applications with WebKing

11/6/2003 - Parasoft, the leading provider of Automated Error Prevention software solutions, announced that Parasoft WebKing 4.1 includes accessibility verification features that enable companies to ensure that their Web sites and applications comply with federal accessibility guidelines. Parasoft will exhibit WebKing 4.1 at the IDEAS 2003 conference in Washington DC November 5-6.

"There are a lot of companies talking about how they support accessibility initiatives, but not as many taking action, " said Gary Brunell, Parasoft Vice President of Professional Services. "Accessibility verification is a critical part of our focus on Automated Error Prevention. Parasoftís goal is to help companies prevent software errors, including those that occur because software wasnít designed to support different users and environments. By offering accessibility verification with WebKing, we help organizations not only conform with industry guidelines, but also make their sites and products more reliable for all of their users."

According to 2000 US Census data, approximately 19 percent of the US population has some type of disability. By using the static analysis features in WebKing, organizations can automatically ensure that their Web sites and applications are accessible to those individuals and that they comply with standards defined by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

"Accessibility verification is necessary for any technology made for or by US government agencies," said Brunell. "But itís also a real challenge if you have to do it manually or piece together a variety of technologies, which is why - even five years later -.many organizations still donít meet the requirements. But WebKing does all of the verification automatically."

WebKing automatically tests the pages and applications at the code level against industry guidelines and reports any violations. It enables organizations to prevent functionality problems that may occur when users with disabilities try to access an application with assistive technologies such as screen readers, refreshable Braille displays and alternative input devices.

Because most of the accessibility guidelines prompt organizations to follow design and navigation best practices and add elements to ensure that Web applications function in a variety of contexts, they not only prevent problems that would affect users with disabilities, but also help prevent errors that could impact users on desktop systems, PDAs, Web-enabled phones, kiosks and other existing and upcoming Internet devices.

About Section 508
On August 7, 1998, former President Clinton signed The Workforce Investment Act, including the Rehabilitation Act Amendments with an expanded Section 508. Designed to support the approximately 54 million Americans that have some level of disability, Section 508 requires that any technology produced by or for US government agencies must be accessible to people with disabilities. It includes requirements for Web application and Web site development, which focus on ensuring page transformations to a variety of devices and making content understandable and navigable on a variety of devices.
