VDC Expects Smart Fabrics/Interactive Textiles (SFIT) Market to Grow

11/5/2003 - The global market for SFIT-enabled solutions is expected to reach $720 million by 2008, according to a study published by VDC this month.

SFIT-enabled solutions include:

  • garments
  • accessories
  • medical monitoring devices
  • wearable entertainment
  • fitness gear
  • many other consumer, industrial and military systems

The most attractive near-term market opportunities for suppliers of SFIT-enabling technologies, and SFIT solutions are expected to include:

  • mission-critical military gear
  • certain medical information/monitoring and control systems
  • luxury goods/elite athlete consumer products niches

While near-term demand remains modest in total available market terms, the longer-term potential for suppliers of SFIT-enabling technologies and SFIT-enabled solutions is significant. According to Chris Rezendes, Vice President at VDC, "The SFIT or textronics market represents an interesting investment opportunity right now. Military-industry partnerships focusing on SFIT are operating extremely well. Program managers and their industrial partners are balancing near-term DOD mission requirements, with mid-term industrial market demand and longer-term consumer market opportunities. The net effect should be feature-rich, reliable solutions that deliver enormous value to the DOD."
