Fujitsu Siemens Expands with Centera Content Addressed Storage

10/31/2003 - Fujitsu Siemens Computers announced the expansion of its product portfolio to include EMC's Centera, as part of the existing European distribution agreement for EMC's enterprise online storage solutions. Centera, the world's first Content Addressed Storage (CAS), is a software and hardware solution purpose-built to optimize the retention, protection and distribution of fixed content. Prices for this new storage solution, now available, start at EUR 127,000 (without VAT).

The revision-proof storage of the information content is what makes Centera unique. Traditionally, data to be protected from changes was kept on slower nearline systems such as optical disks. With Centera, however, conventional disks can be used to store this kind of protected content, which represents up to 75 percent of all newly created digital data. As a result, the data can be quickly made available online, and its authenticity is preserved with significantly lower TCO (total cost of ownership). Centera is designed to store data for years or even decades and ensures content integrity due to its internal redundancy and self-healing capabilities.

Speeding up storage processes
In addition to content addressing, Centera delivers features that are crucial for large-scale deployments, including self-healing, non-disruptive maintenance and upgrades as well as content replication. Companies like Legato, documentum, IXOS, KVS and many others have quickly recognized the value of such a system, and more than 70 third-party applications across a variety of industries are already integrated with it. With its powerful set of APIs, legacy applications can also be quickly and easily enabled to work with Centera.

"In connection with our Ceyoniq document management system, Centera was the ideal replacement for our existing jukebox solution. Long term cost savings resulted from the faster data access, simplified management, higher scalability and avoiding format changes during later technology upgrades;" commented Jochen Brünger, head of the data processing center at insurer Continentale Versicherung. "A further advantage is the integrated site-independent mirrored data management, which has given us data availability thus far unheard of with jukeboxes. We were particularly impressed by the notable cooperation of specialists from the companies involved."

The Centera Compliance Edition easily facilitates conforming to regulations and standards, providing the advanced retention and disposition functionality necessary to fulfill compliance requirements for certain applications and content. This innovative storage solution allows petabyte scalability for a wide range of digital assets, including electronic corporate documents, e-mail archives, X-rays and MRIs (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), and completed CAD/CAM designs. It provides fast, simple online access to fixed content while preserving the authenticity of data (including the optical variety), and all with the lowest possible TCO.
