Fujitsu Consulting, Octanewave Mobilize City of Mississauga Inspectors

10/31/2003 - Fujitsu Consulting (Canada) and Octanewave Software Inc. announced that the two companies have jointly applied their mobility expertise to win a Field Automation Project with the City of Mississauga. The project will enable field-based computing for building inspectors, by-law enforcement officers and fire and emergency services inspectors, providing them with remote access to information that is critical to the inspection, reporting and filing processes.

Working with the city, Fujitsu Consulting developed a detailed project assessment plan to determine the most suitable technology platform. The enterprise mobility platform provided by Octanewave proved to be the best choice for the Field Automation Project because of its adherence to industry standards and its ability to tightly integrate with the existing application and operations infrastructure.

"The Octanewave Wireless Enterprise Platform was selected because it is a flexible, feature-rich mobility offering that provides the City of Mississauga with a single platform supporting current as well as future mobility needs," said Mohammad Aamir, founder and president of Octanewave. "While deployment is fast and easy, the technology can also scale up to meet the future needs of the city."

According to a survey undertaken by Fujitsu Consulting in August 2003, very few Canadian municipalities are currently taking advantage of the more advanced benefits that can be achieved by mobile-enabling applications and processes.

"Mobility is no longer a novelty, it is a necessity," stated Jon Barry, vice president for Fujitsu Consulting (Canada). "The City of Mississauga has embraced mobility as the best long-term solution for cost effectively increasing productivity and enhancing key municipal services."

When complete, the Field Automation Project will put Mississauga ahead of many other Canadian municipalities, by eliminating the inspectors' daily routine of frequent visits to municipal offices for filing of inspection reports and other related documents.

"The Field Automation Project is another great example of the leadership and innovation that the City of Mississauga has historically demonstrated in delivering improved municipal services at lower costs," said Mayor Hazel McCallion. "This is exactly what the citizens of Mississauga have come to expect."

The benefits of mobilizing the field inspection teams are three-fold:

  • Improved service: more time in the field means greater efficiency of inspectors and an increase in client service levels
  • Faster turnaround: once an inspection has taken place, onsite filing of reports allows for faster turnaround of documents, reducing the need for return visits to deliver these documents
  • Lower cost: Mobile-enabling the field inspection staff further reduces the need for expensive office space
