Fujitsu Siemens Launches Rack-optimized Server with Intel Itanium2

10/31/2003 - With the new Intel-based PRIMERGY RXI600, Fujitsu Siemens Computers is rounding off its high-end product portfolio and offering the market a complete product spectrum with a new 64-bit, 4-way rack server. Thanks to its 64-bit architecture which is fully compatibility with 32-bit hardware, the RXI600's Itanium2 platform offers an ideal basis for the future. The new server will be available throughout Europe in January 2004. Introductory prices in Germany will be in the region of €25,000 (excl. VAT).

The new Itanium2 processor architecture is a 64-bit platform increasingly supported by large independent software houses. The launch of the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64-bit edition and availability of the 64-bit version of Microsoft SQL Server will encourage greater penetration of Itanium2-based systems into the high-end server market. Together with large software solutions, such as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) applications that make widespread use of the Itanuim2 processorís new performance features, complete 64-bit solution stacks for business critical computing scenarios can now be obtained.

The PRIMERGY RXI600 server is aimed primarily at the large account market segment, where it is designed to satisfy the typical requirements while offering room for future developments. It supports application environments such as databases, business intelligence and data warehousing. Positioned in the Intel high-end server market, this server ensures that applications can gain significant performance advantages from the 64-bit linear storage-addressing facilities. Another area where users stand to benefit greatly from these architectural features is in the back-end server segment with system architecture between storage subsystems and application server LANs. Reinforced by its familiar security and high-availability features, the PRIMERGY RXI600 rack server provides the ideal platform for these application scenarios.

"With the addition of this new Intel Itanium2 processor-powered servers to the PRIMERGY server family, Fujitsu Siemens Computers is delivering high performance systems which will support Business Critical Computing for a broad range of customers", said Mike Fister, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Enterprise Systems Group, Intel Corporation. "The combination of Intel's Itanium2 processor and Fujitsu Siemens Computers enterprise computing expertise will provide businesses with powerful, flexible and scaleable IT solutions, enabling them to realise cost savings and achieve growth."

This innovative technology will satisfy even the greatest of user expectations regarding processing performance, optimized storage use, maximum I/O throughput and outstanding hardware reliability. This leads to a significant hike in performance in various areas of the IT infrastructure. Particular targets in the mid-tier range are applications requiring the special qualities of the Itanium2 processor when processing massive quantities of data. These include applications for investment calculation models or extracting and analyzing data from enormous databases. Security applications for data encryption or decryption will likewise benefit greatly from the PRIMERGY RXI600ís new processor technology.

The large proportion of users who also employ supercomputers from Fujitsu Siemens Computersí hpc line (High-Performance Computing Line) for complex technical applications also stand to gain, particularly from the Itanium2ís increased computing power and better suitability for large CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) models.

The full binary compatibility of the Itanium2 IPF (Intel Processor Family) with 32-bit hardware means existing software can run problem-free on the Itanium2-based RXI600. The IA32 Execution Layer from Microsoft, to be available shortly, can optimize the processing speed of 32-bit applications.
